Re: Should I pay for damage caused?

Of course they didn't offer thanks for the tailpiece—they were hoping you would give them a whole new instrument.

Re: Etude book or something like that

You might look at Marilynn Mair's The Complete Mandolinist, available from Mel Bay. She has compiled scales and etudes in keys up to four flats and four sharps. Other sections deal with developing...

    Re: White Stained Mandolins?

When I worked as a picture framer we used white casein paint, rubbed in with a soft cloth then finished with wax, usually on maple. I don't know why it wouldn't work on spruce as well. Shiva is the...

    Re: beside the mandolin.

I get enough abuse playing viola. No need to take up banjo and accordion as well.

Re: New Kelley A model violin style

Very classy. I like the long, narrow f-holes.

So glad you're alive. There's a special place in hell for people who don't stop after an accident like that.

    Re: LH Position question

All in all, left hand position is much more similar to violin than guitar. Mandolin necks are hugely variable, though. You'll find a lot more variation in mandolinists' than violinists' technique....

    Re: Albuquerque relative humidity

This is a complicated subject, and almost anyone you talk to will give you a different answer. For a sampling, this thread has some discussion from desert dwellers.

    To further confuse the issue,...

Re: ebay Eastman violin, place your bets

14" on a violin would most often refer to the length of the back rather than the string length.

Re: Would someone please buy this

This is your best course of action. You really want us to collectively talk you into buying the Collings. It's used, so you'll pay way, way less than for a new one. With the Ellis as your cover,...

So this means that, after the first guy who messed it up, no one along the way took half a second to read the label?

Re: ebay Eastman violin, place your bets

The one- or two-piece back seems to be a function of which chunk of wood they pull out of the pile.

Re: ebay Eastman violin, place your bets

I'm going with the VL305 because of the boxwood fittings. The lower-end Eastmans usually have ebony.

The price you named is good for ANY Eastman, unless someone sat in it. This one looks pretty...

    Re: Who doesn't memorize tunes/songs?

Have to say I take exception to this statement and some similar ones from folded path. You are blaming reading music for a whole host of other issues. A decent musician—and that's a lot of amateurs,...

    Re: Uther my cat..

So sorry, T.D. We lost an almost-18-year-old over the winter, and have a 16-year-old that's showing his age. It's awful when they have to go. I'm sure he had a wonderful life with you.

    Re: Who doesn't memorize tunes/songs?

I have come to the realization that I don't learn well by ear, and that memorization of music is not one of my sharper skills.

Memorization shortcomings go back to childhood. It seems like as a...
