  4. Re: Best USED Mando under $500 with Radius Fretboard: Your Picks!

Played one of the breedloves recently, and it was really nice. Good neck and fingerboard.
  5. The mandolin I had the most fun playing was....

Everybody wants the high $$ instruments, but the instrument I had the most fun playing was an epiphone mm20. It was really easy to play. I zip-tied a Seymour Duncan woody pickup to the end of a...

This is one of the most gorgeous pieces of music I've ever heard. Wow!
  7. Re: Pick weight (thickness, size, whatever the term is)

A thicker pick produces more fundamental, a thinner pick produces mode overtones.

If you use a pick with no "give," then your hand and fingers must relax. A pick with some flex is often easier...

    Re: Right Hand Technique

If you can play three consecutive stings in a row, constantly alternating down/up, you can do about anything with a pick. Be relaxed and swing wide.

Re: keys that don't sound good

There are definitely keys that ring better on the mandolin, due to factors like overtones, and the resonating frequency the instrument body is tuned to. I've recently begun practicing a couple tunes...

Re: Right Hand Planting vs. Free Floating

The only professional mandolin player I've seen play without resting his hand or pinky is Danny Roberts. That's one guy out of 1000's of great players. When I grew up (pre-thile), more people...

Re: Right Hand Planting vs. Free Floating

I don't understand why planting has become a thing to "overcome." What professional mandolin players are playing without touching the top or resting their hand on the bridge? I'm not seeing that as...

Re: Some advice needed for reading music.

In general, one thing adults forget about, is that kids spend a very long time reading very simple songs. Ever been to an 8th grade band concert? It's not that interesting. You could get a graded...

    Re: 2017 Winfield mandolin winners

Good question. The only rule is if you win, you have to sit out 5 years. Isaac won in '06, and is a working professional musician. Solly won in '11. Pete Huttlinger won 2nd place a few years ago...

    Re: 2017 Winfield mandolin winners

This was one of the toughest Mando contests I've seen at Winfield. The first round was packed with great players, and honestly, any of them could have made the cut. Isaac played terrific on a...
