Re: New Vessel Loar A5 tribute

I'd bet that there are a couple of areas where this mandolin exceeds the Griffith. I've played it, and while it is very cool, it is not perfect.

Just like when you compare the scroll and binding...

Re: New Vessel Loar A5 tribute

It is a refreshing change to see this crowd getting so worked up over an A5 mandolin.

Re: Should Bryan Kimsey scallop my guitar?

John, I like the embedded title of your photo: "platejunk"...

Another $100 quoted repair job that will cost you $500 of bench time; I feel your pain.....

Re: Should Bryan Kimsey scallop my guitar?

At the ASIA symposium last summer, I got in a lot of Martin nerdiness conversations with the guys who run the place. Above everything else, I'm amazed that a relatively small local company has the...

Re: Should Bryan Kimsey scallop my guitar?

I'd like to believe that the guitar market as a whole has matured enough to understand that these are vintage instruments of a finite quantity and that we've all learned from our past mistakes...

Re: Should Bryan Kimsey scallop my guitar?

Any reputable luthier can perform this task; it is not complicated nor mysterious. People have been doing it for decades.

It will void any warranty and don't come back crying in two years if the...
  8. Re: sanding/scratching picks for better grip

Rub a little bit of violin rosin on the pick.

If you have a thick modern finish that your bridge slips around on, the same works well for that.

    Re: Adding or replacing binding?

Rob!!!! You installed a virzi after the fact???? That's a whole 'nuther level of pain & punishment!

    'Betcha won't do that again...;)

    Re: Adding or replacing binding?

As things deteriorate, it will be even more critical to pay attention to the work luthiers do to make sure they do not go even more into the hole for someone else's unrealistic expectations.

    Call...
  11. Re: How important is having the original hardshell case?

It is like having the original matching numbers engine on an old muscle car.
  12. Re: Should I learn to make bridges while I'm at it?

    I sometimes make my own.

I sometimes buy them from Cumberland Acoustics.

    I sometimes repurpose old ones.

If your goal is to become a lifetime builder, then they are all skills you will...
  13. Re: Good mandolin choice for woman with small hands

Yup. I know plenty of small women who play the double bass with a 42" scale length and they have no problems....

    Re: Adding or replacing binding?

One of the best personal developments you will ever have as a working luthier it the day you learn to say, "No thank you."....seconded by a more enthusiastic, "No $#@%ing way!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Re: New Vessel Loar A5 tribute

    Thx.

Gary, you can drive to see the original in a weekend from your house. This one would be the perfect calling card for an introduction: "Hi. I made this interesting copy of your Loar from the...

I was always told the secret to making a million dollars with a vintage guitar shop is to start out with 2 million worth of inventory. Many folks with a good size collection think they can use that...

  23. Re: Autumn Leaves - Mandolin Chord Melody [Tab]

I think it was a favor for Cannonball doing the Kind of Blue sessions and only receiving something like $225 union wage while Miles made millions off the recording. Isn't...
