  1. Re: Looking for a repair person, north Jersey, NYC

Ian Davlin of Lark Street Music in Teaneck has done exquisite work on several of my instruments. I recommend him highly.
And Lark Street has many wonderful old and new instruments.

f-d - yep, the 544s always needed kingpins by the time you got them used. Those '60s Volvos were hard to kill - great engines and trannys, but quite a few annoying weak spots that were correctible...

Thanks, Mike, you got me off the hook. I hated the one 144 I owned. Always something electrical wrong with it.

Three old Volvo guys on one thread! I started with a used 122S in 1965, my first car; drove it to the first "Story of Bluegrass" festival in Fincastle VA in 1966.
Owned about 6 or 7 over the years,...

Wow, that sounds great; if that had crossed my path I'd have paid more for it! Think you got a real bargain!
Had no idea Levin made such fine-sounding mandos.

    Re: Brentrup Prices Up?

I owned a Brentrup blackface M21V for a few years - made from Italian spruce and Bosnian maple. Mr. Brentrup told me the one I had was the prototype for a number of those he built in the early 2000s....

Re: more accurate clip on tuner than Snark?

I've never found a clip-on tuner that I thought worked very well. Even when they read the note correctly, they allow for too much slop from the correct pitch, imho.

Stefan - from a quick look at Schaller's lit for the mandolin Grand Tunes, it looks like they would tune in the opposite direction from Waverlys.

I made one from one of the larger ones. Took a little sawing, filing, and super-glueing, but you can make it to fit your tuner buttons exactly.
