I use a McClung on my mandolin from Hill Country Stringworks.
Doug Edwards does an awesome job and also made my custom truss rod cover.

I have been a lifetime member for many many years and the Gospel tunes are what I love about Ben Clark. I would be sadly disappointed if he were to change, there are plenty of other teachers out...

    Re: Eastman mandolins

I had a 515 on trial, beautiful instrument, clear notes, no issues. however it was not the sound I want and I knew it would not get played enough to keep it so I sent it back. I like a more dry woody...

Re: Looking for a first mandolin

I agree with Tony, check cafe classifieds and/or reputable dealers advertised here. But anything $300 or under will definitely leave you with the temptation to upgrade that you are trying to avoid.

    The (China)Loar

Have these improved? I once thought I would never buy one, I had seen and played a couple at music stores that take them straight from the box to hang on the wall. They sounded terrible and had...

    Re: gibson F9 vs kentucky

F9 gets my vote ;) But easy for me considering I've never played a Kentucky and my F9 is far better than any other mandolin that I have tried. Yet.

    Re: Neotech Strap

I used one for a while but seemed like too much strap for a mandolin. I prefer a thin round braided one that will stay on in the case and more comfortable in my opinion. However, they are greatly...

Re: don't shoot me....another string question

Thank you all for your response. My mistake was to mention the F9 at all in this thread. I don't expect the MK to compare, I only want it at its best. And the tone isn't terrible now, it is actually...

Re: don't shoot me....another string question

Ok, I get this. But if I asked what is the best strings recommended for my Gibson F9, would I have to get answers like this? I just want to know the best for the MK, just as I did my F9 when I first...

Re: don't shoot me....another string question

Thanks, I don't need volume on this one and I know it will never sound as good as the F9 but as I stated originally I am just trying to get the best possible sound out of it. It has a sweet tone,...

    Re: Picks?

I have used my medium guitar pick on my mandolin but prefer the sound of a much heavier triangle mandolin pick. If you like the sound of the guitar pick, there is no law against it.

    don't shoot me....another string question

I'm really trying to give this Michael Kelly Dragonfly a fair chance. It keeps in tune, has clear notes, beautiful mandolin but of course sounds not even close to my F9 that I tend to compare...

I do see it but it shouldn't be an issue. Like F-2 Dave said, the finish was probably thin there to begin with.
