Re: Early Gibson - Lefty conversion

If you're talking about the fretboard, early Gibson mandolins have flat fretboards, no radius. Steve at Cumberland should be able to fill you in on what you need.

Re: Early Gibson - Lefty conversion

Even if it had tone bars (F hole model) and you converted it to left-handed it would be OK. You'd never hear the difference. As has been stated you need a left handed nut, a left-handed bridge...

    Re: Need parts

There is some good news here. The tailpiece cover is there. If the tailpiece has all eight pins left then the tailpiece and the cover are worth more than the carcass of the mandolin. Depending on...

    Re: Need parts

The other side is don't automatically expect the back and sides to be solid. Kay was selling laminated sides and backs as a feature as far back as the thirties.

Re: Better machines give better sustain?

When you make a change to your instrument and pay good money for it then I would expect you to hear a difference. Unfortunately others might not hear the same difference.

It was built by Kay of Chicago, one their body shapes, one of their headstock designs. Nothing really unusual about it.

  10. Re: Gretsch 9350 Park Lane - opinions please?

I was in a Guitar Center near me that had this Gretsch and a Rogue mandolin hanging on the wall. The Rogue sounded and played better.

Paul left us way too soon. He was the go to guy for this stuff. Good luck on your quest.

Re: Can you identify this brand logo?

Silvertone was a Sears brand name. The mandolin was built by Kay of Chicago. Sears didn't manufacture anything. The one you linked to was made by Kay for Sears as well. These were sold under many...

    Re: "The Gibson" logo

The basic A model didn't generally get the logo. It was on the next models up. That may not hold true for all years. If you go to www.mandolinarchive.com and search through the 1922-1924 years and...

Re: over vs under tuners why?

Most likely the models for F4 vs F5 (assumption on my part as Siminoff sold two models years back). You will find Grovers are fairly short with the exception of the Gibson Grover's made years ago....

Re: Dremel - IKEA Flexible LED Light

I've actually been using LED desk lamps as shop lights on tools. This coupled with a switched charger might work for me in a few places. Thanks.

The size of the screw that Gotoh uses is M2.3x10. Good luck on finding those.
