Re: Northfield F5S On the Way

Ahh... i thought the Northfields were a lot more than that. Apologies for rushing to judgement. Enjoy the new mandolin!

Re: Northfield F5S On the Way

If it is really the case that all the Collings needed was some additional setup work, then this is a case of above and beyond customer service from the Vendor. I infer from your fist post that the...

    Re: Old Train Solo

Very cool - thanks for posting! I'll have to try this out. Manzanita is one of my all-time fav bluegrass albums.

    Cheers,

Re: How to play chords to sing along to?

If you are new to chords, an easier to place to start than chop chords are simple 2-finger chords (especially if you are singing along). I would guess that we all use these in various aspects of...

Re: Need Advice on Selling/Upgrading Mandolin

It sounds as though you actually like the breedlove sound. I would consider putting the money into the fretwork - you may find that it is much better to play after you do that and you may be happier...
  6. Re: Sound: opinions sought on technique vs instrument, i.e. anti-

I went to Wintergrass last weekend - lots of fantastic musicians. There is a band called Appalachian Roadshow who I'd never heard before - all very strong musicians - and probably one of the best...

    Re: Missing the bluegrass sound

All of the above - sadly there are no shortcuts.

Learn a bunch fiddle tunes (and make sure you can play them clearly before you play them fast)
    Develop your rhythm playing
    Practice making up...

    Re: Pickup or microphone?

We have used both. Our band is the "acoustical group that just wants to amplify a bit above the crowd noise" category. I prefer using a mic - I have an SM57 that plugs directly into our PA system....

Re: Help with Big Muddy Action/Bridge height

Thanks pops. I checked fretting 1 and 12 together again, and taking a closer look it is as you describe - some space but very little. Big Muddy specs "Medium Light" strings - 11-16-24-38. ...

Re: Help with Big Muddy Action/Bridge height

I measure about 1/16" between fret and string for both G and E at the 12th fret. Minimal space above the first fret when fretting second fret. If I fret first and 12th, i do see space at frets...

    Re: Subscription Tutorial Sites

I'll give a +1 for Peghead Nation. I have been subscribed to Sharon's Intermediate Bluegrass course for a few months. I really like having the video so I can see what she's doing, plus she gives a...

Re: Why keys of B and B flat?

I'm sure this has already been said farther up in this thread, but sometimes B or Bb is just the best key that suits the vocalist. One you start to get the hang of where the major and pentatonic...

Help with Big Muddy Action/Bridge height

I bought a Big Muddy MW-0 last year. The bridge it came with was too low... there was significant buzzing above fret 5. I contacted Mike, and he sent me some alternate bridges. I had the bridge...

    Re: Breedlove american FO thoughts

I'm confused. Did you buy the used Breedlove, or did you keep the Eastman?
  20. Re: Sound: opinions sought on technique vs instrument, i.e. anti-

My MT is tends to be pretty bright - I find the Dunlop primetone picks emphasize that brightness. For me, the D'andrea proplec 1.5mm picks give me a darker tone. I'm not suggesting a blue chip...
  21. Re: Sound: opinions sought on technique vs instrument, i.e. anti-

Pick and string choice can also make a big difference to sound (and are relatively cheap to experiment with). Do you use a pointed or more rounded pick? Rounded may take away some of that...

    Re: Kentucky KM 505 variations?

Wow... all along I t hought my Collings MT label didn't have a signature, but I just looked closely and there it is! Kinda hidden by the busy label. Thanks for the tip!

Re: Sold my Collings and got a Pava

Interesting. I had a similar experience with a Weber Yellowstone. I bought it at Wintergrass. Loved the sound, but after playing it for a few months it never really got comfortable to play - there...
