Re: Just bought my first mandolin!

Have played a couple of Ratliffs for a few minutes. Both were really good instruments. Assuming that it’s properly set up, you’re beginning your mandolin journey with a quality instrument.

    Re: new mando choices

Well, you do have to bear in mind that the mandolin in the video is electric, and it does appear to be plugged in, so you’re probably not getting a natural acoustic sound. Possibly acoustic in the...

    Re: new mando choices

Have played a couple of Fyldes for a few minutes. They’re decent instruments. However, you need to be aware that there’s a fret marker up at the 9th fret, rather than the 10th. Apparently the guy...

Re: Thank you Scott and Dan!

Can only echo what others have already said. Been a member here for almost 8 years, and rarely a day has gone by without me checking in, to see what’s new.

Thanks also to the mandolin community...

Re: Inexpensive starter mandolin advice needed

Totally concur with what the other contributors have already said.

My son got a great Eastman 305 from Eagle, nicely set up. It’s a terrific starter mandolin - really good build quality, solid...

  10. Re: Beginner! Eastman 305 vs Kentucky KM-150 vs...??

We had the same conundrum about 16 months ago when one of my sons wanted a decent starter mandolin.

Tried a KM150 - it was OK, but the strings were old and the set up was non-existent. Drove to...

    Re: Hiscox cases

Been using one for around 4 years - solid as a rock, great catches (4 of them), and really hard wearing. They’re quite large, by mandolin standards, but offer a significant amount of protection.

Re: The Ol Pals Footprints in the Snow

Guys - slightly off topic - but what’s the song about? I’ve read and re-read the lyrics several times and am still confused!

Did he find her dead in the snow? In which case, why does he bless...

    Re: Tuner...not Tuners

Used a blue snark for years, but got a TC Polytune clip for my birthday, and the Snark hasn’t seen any action since then. The TC is great! Highly visible screen, very accurate, and no “hunting” for...

Re: Kentucky KM-505 vs Loar LM-600

there are, of course, other things to consider. Is your heart totally set on an F style, or will an A scratch your itch? You get more “bang for your buck” with an A, as those scrolls cost more...

Re: Kentucky KM-505 vs Loar LM-600

I’m sure others will join in soon enough, but I’ll start the ball rolling.

First and foremost, whichever mandolin you end up getting, make sure it’s properly set up by an experienced luthier or a...

Thanks pops1. I’m not going to do any work on it, but it’s going to a luthier for a closer look.

Re: High action - is this fixable?

Thanks for the swift reply, sblock. The mandolin is an F5, and it joins the body at the 14th fret. Nothing loose, no cracks or separation, and all stable.

It does have a truss rod - one with a...

High action - is this fixable?

  24. Re: Shioping mandolin - Nov 1 - West to East Coast - safest metho

Another idea is to always take photos of the package before it gets sent - that way you’ve got proof that the address was right, it was covered in Fragile tape, the box was in good shape, etc.
