Re: 18" scale length-Help with options

It sounds like he's recommending a regular set of medium gauge mandolin strings "using gauges of .40, .26, .15, and .11".

Re: A real Gibson A two point?

"Replicate" may be a bit too generous Allen. Mimic or allude to perhaps? I have the Ibenez version of this mandolin but it's in need of some major repair work. I bought it because I loved that red...

    Re: action on electric mando

If you can remove the neck (assuming a bolt on neck) you can also shim the neck pocket to bring the action down lower for regular fingering. I like to use business cards as shims. Good luck!!

The previous owner may have had it setup for some slide playing ala' Sammy Bush  It should be easy enough to get setup to your liking.....

Re: Any Experience With Walnut F5 Mandolins?

The back is absolutely gorgeous!! I have no experience with walnut as a back/sides wood, but you've gotten some good above.

Thanks Mark, very fine sounding band and wonderful song selection to compliment Danielle's singing abilities. I can hear why some of the criticisms are voiced about the 5 string electric mandolin and...

  8. Re: Pick-guard/finger-rest, on-off "Stay at home" gallery.

I have my pickguards all settled down nicely so I won't take them off for a picture. Guess I can't play this game either, Dem. Sorry ;)

    Re: Chords to notes? How?

The OP's original question is "Chords to notes?" which occurs to me could be better restated as "Notes to chords?". Agree with Craig D. above, learn the whole fret board and also some basic theory of...

  12. Re: String Gauge Difference and Effect On Intonation

I had been using D'A EFT-74s on my 1916 F-4 for years and liked the sound a lot except that it sounded too similar to my F-5 style mandolin (with F holes) also strung with EFT-74s. When the EFW-74s...
  13. Re: Quick and dirty electric mandocello conversion

The right hand spacing looks to be pretty tight to my eyes (hand?) like you were more focused on placing each pair over a pole piece on the pickup. I'm no expert but my understanding is that the...

    Re: Eastman MDO305 Octave Mandolin

I say, go for it!!! I don't own an octave but $750 isn't going to add much to your future house. Think of how much it will add to your overall joy in life.

Thank you Jordan for the transcribed solo and John for the rhythm chords. Quite useful indeed and now the work is cut out for several of us.

Re: What strings are you currently playing?

    '56 F-12 f hole gets D'A EFT-74 Flat Tops, the '16 F-4 oval hole gets D'A EFW-74 Flat Wound and 2002 Duff H-5 gets D' EFT-76s when I can find them, otherwise D'A EF-76s. Guitars?? I'll have to...

    Re: Strings and setup

I found the J-75s were tougher on my left hand, with sore fingertips and finger cramping after a bit of playing, and that's with fairly low action. I like the Flat Tops better for more comfortable...
