Re: What's your new fiddle tune?

Jay Ungar has a book of waltzes with a feel like Midnight on the Water.
  2. Re: Definition of a good mandolin player’s spouse

Disclaimer: I know I'm really lucky.

Since I met my wife a few years ago while she was playing guitar in a jam at WinterGrass, I knew it would be good. After marrying, in the preCovid times, we...

    Re: Pick Thickness

Pick acquisition syndrome is orders of magnitude less expensive than MAS. You'll probably end up with a bit of a collection after a while, size, shape, material and thickness, etc. The traveling...
  4. Re: Article: Winter Virtual Mandolin Camp with Alan Bibey, Don St

The summer one was. David was a pleasant surprise for a non Celtic guy. Fan of Alan, Don and Matt.

And no audible noodling like a camp or workshop:)
  5. Re: Rest Strokes - a means to an end, or part of regular techniqu

John Moore told me in a workshop that he uses them whenever possible. Pretty amazing to watch him play like that.

    Re: Pick Thickness

Many people like 1-1.5mm. But some like real thin, and some 2 mm or thicker.

As you can see, mileage varies.
  7. Re: Who is this singer/mando player? Nashville Jam/Goodnight Iren

Not sure, but maybe Annie Lawrence, judging by the Weber Artist page.

Re: Looking for some new tunes

Paul Glasse, but very hard to find. Tim Connell’s Stumptown Swing album.

Aaron Weinstein has some great YouTube videos doing chord melody.

And there’s plenty of mp3s under the ‘learn/listen’...
  9. Re: Anybody fixed this kind of left thumb aggravation?

That’s why you take lessons as a beginner. I spent 6 months on the wrong path before I got good instruction. Easier to start right than to fix basic things later.
  10. Re: Article: Acoustic Disc Launches New Web Presence

It’s a wonderful site with otherwise unobtainable musical treasures.

    And even nicer now:)
  11. Re: Clean fretting where there's more finger than board?

Fret precisely, short fingernails. Practice slowly, it is harder to get a cleaner tone with the small frets. No magic there, for me anyway.

Re: Old mandolins versus new a conclusion

But playing in the dark evens out the tone in my septuagenarian ears:)

    Re: I Hate Playing Chords

You can build a 7 chord by either dropping the root or raising the 5. So 243x is pretty simple, so is 545x. You need the 3 and the b7, the 1 and 5 are optional. I wouldn’t bother with all 4...

Re: ? about Dunlop Primetone picks...

I’m fond of the 346 shape Primetone, but they’re more slippery to hold than a BC. But the Radex, same shape in the 1 mm, is very suitable. Wears a bit more quickly than a Primetone. BCs as fairly...

Re: Multiple guitars but just one mandolin

Just to be sure, the tune is “for what it’s worth”, originally by Buffalo Springfield.

    Re: String shortage!?

Suggesting that there have been other periods of shortage provides no information or insight into the current situation except to say ‘it occurs sometimes’.

    That’s not particularly helpful to...

    Re: I Hate Playing Chords

    I’d learn G chords:
    455x for G
    523x for C or 023x
    745 for D or 245x
    022x for Em or 457x

But play for fun. Learn lots of melodies, there’s plenty of tunes to enjoy in all genres.

    Horn...

Really, how relevant is that question? Would ‘better than the 1750’s’ be a good answer?

Juststrings seems to have them now, at least the nanoweb ones. But I couldn't find them a few weeks ago and ended up buying something else.
