Re: Converting 8-stringed guitars to mando cellos

That Martin link tales me to a Gretch, Mike! I assume you don’t mean the one with the extra octave string on the G?

I too don’t remember seeing an 8 string guitar in the UK though. I believe my...

    Re: This Gibson legit?

There was a Gibson F in exactly that colour for sale in Paris (the real “French” one) a couple of years ago. It was attributed to Dave Harvey so it possibly sounded OK.

    Edit- it was actually 4...

Re: Sobell Banjola in the classifieds

I get the feeling that if one was any use, Martin Simpson would have had/used one.
  8. Re: Gibson opposes Collings' headstock trademark registration, ci

I forgot to mention that (chocolate aside). My Santa Cruz “F” is just like the Collings. Or is it just like the Gibson or pehaps Gibson is also thinking of registering the letter “F” next!

    Re: Strap Recommendation for A-style

I never did understand why they make straps with buckles; they’re designed to scratch any instrument they’re attached to. I suppose it depends on how much of a cheapskate you are. There’s a firm in...

It doesn’t have to be as simple as a headstock shape. In Germany - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-53510219

Re: How did the "curl" on the mandolin body evolve?

I’ve always had much the same opinion about neck ties - a totally superfluous accessory which I pretty much avoided throughout my professional life. Ties are pretty much compulsory in certain circles...

No, they all sound pretty bad!
  13. Re: Hello All. I'm new here, first post. Loving the mandolin.

    Welcom to the forum!

Don’t worry about the Eastman, it’s probably a much better instrument than most people here started on and should serve you well into your addiction.

    Re: yamaha mandolins

That begs the question of what they used the label on back in the 30s? Presumably it wasn’t on their pianos. Finding an earlier label on something later doesn’t bother me as much as finding a later...

Re: NMD Late 70's Ibanez 524?

I suppose I should get mine out and play it occasionally but, alas, its only one of many! Mine no longer has the original case - did a straight swap for a Calton many years ago (the full story is on...

Re: NMD Late 70's Ibanez 524?

Keep an eye on the faux. Turtle/celluloid - I took the pickguard off my old Ibanez a couple of years ago as it was deteriorating/gassing off.

Apart from the handle, that looks like the original...

    Re: Help with case color

Back in the last century, an old mate of mine ordered a black Calton but when it arrived his wife wouldn’t have it in the house as she thought it looke like a baby’s coffin. I got a ‘phone call...

  19. Re: Playing a collings - what would an "upgrade" really get me?

Does mandolin A sound better than mandolin B? It’s entirely a matter of opinion and all you can really say is that they’re likely to sound different.
