Thanks, guys. There are some really good insights in your answers I hadn't considered. And not to oversimply, but in generalizing from the above, it seems like there's
1. a significant intial...
When I got my Collings MT, I couldn’t imagine a better sounding mandolin.
Then I got a custom MT2, and once again thought I’d found the pinnacle of mandolins.
Until I got an Ellis A5 Deluxe.
...
Very nice. And a great idea!
dave
Really nicely done!

Used Collings MT, hands down.

Is that a Deering Goodtime? :)
Word of advice: You never really stop getting discouraged. You just learn to work through it. Do yourself a big favor and at least once a week, record your practice session. I listen back to my...
I use Clockwork for a metronome.
Cleartune as a tuner

Have you tried taking a break? When I first played banjo, I practiced a couple hours a day and I never missed a day for almost 2 years. Then I went on vacation where I couldn't take a banjo (I...
Thanks to everyone for their helpful advice! Originally I'd only planned on looking in the city itself, but once you guys pointed out that Elderly isn't THAT far away, I talked my partner into...
We're going to be in Chicago for a week. Are there any good mandolin stores or related places I should hit while I'm in town?

Can't see the photos.
If you also like Bluegrass, be sure to listen to Frank Wakefield. A very big thanks to Don Julin for turning me on to him. He's like Bill Monroe on Bill Monroe's best day.
Listen to his album...
I have both and agree with everything almeriastrings said.
Although you can use the H4n as an audio interface for your computer, it's certainly not optimal for that purpose. Adjustments are hard...
There's some really good stuff in there. Thanks, Jeff!

Another vote for the Scarlett 2i2 or 2i4. I got a 2i4 for Christmas and I've been using it with a Shure SM81 and a RØDE NT1-A and been very happy.

Wow! What a fun song! I wish there were video of you guys playing, because it must have been a blast to play it!
Thanks!

Hi Emily. I agree with Jamie. It would take several months, but I'd try to have a custom Collings made. I suggest going through a dealer because it's likely to be cheaper than buying it directly...
Very nicely done! Thank you.

Mandolin is already a great instrument for people with smaller hands. Unless you have incredibly tiny, child-sized hands, I'd just go with a standard neck thickness and not worry too much about it. ...
I say go ahead and get an F-style mandolin. Just don't make it your first one. I felt the same way as you when I started (most people here probably did), but I'm really glad someone talked me into...
Are you using it for a live show or for a recording?
-dave
Well, you could at least get the soundtrack.
It's on Amazon, and iTunes.
The craigslist post is gone. Does that mean you got it?
