Re: post a video of yourself

Here’s a little holiday music. Sorry, there is banjo content, but I have managed to bookend it with mandolin.

It would appear I have forgotten how to post a video here. Never fear, here is a link to get you there.

Now that the turkey is gone…

Who is ready for the holiday music to start, now that Thanksgiving is over?

    Re: Good news, bad news.

I have two mandolins. An older Red Diamond Vintage model, and a brand new Ellis Fern.
    I’m done shopping forever.

    Re: Gibson F5 Fern finish

I had a Varnished Fern from 2003 signed by Danny Roberts. It was easily the second best mandolin I have ever owned. I reserve the top spot in my collection for my Red Diamond Vintage model.
  6. Re: Where's a good place to get a nice custom tailpiece?

I love the James tailpiece. When changing the strings, I just put the string loop over the post and close the cover. That holds it while I’m working with the tuner end.

    Re: Clark 2-point Mandolins

So, when you say two-point, are you referring to the design like Don Stiernberg’s Nugget, or Jethro Burns’ Old Gibson? Even Will Kimble has a unique offset two-point design which some might say is a...
  9. Re: anyone own one of the Nugget/Collings A Tim O'Brien mandos?

I’ve owned seven or more Collings mandolins, and this TOB sounds pretty different from all of them. I have never owned a Nugget, so I don’t know what the signature sound is for one. I have a friend...
  10. Re: anyone own one of the Nugget/Collings A Tim O'Brien mandos?

Yeah, this is a problem every player should have. Which one should I play? I solved that problem by having both of them out at the same time.

I learned a lot about setup from this mandolin. It...
  11. Re: anyone own one of the Nugget/Collings A Tim O'Brien mandos?

I am now the owner of #23. I’ve always been curious about these, and finally found one. I was a bit underwhelmed by it. On a whim, I fitted it with a new bridge from Cumberland Acoustics. Within a...

Re: What is your band's sound setup?

Five piece band. Ear Trumpet Edwina mic run thru an Aphex 207d preamp and a 31 band equalizer. Various speakers, but mostly JBL Eon G2 powered speakers.

    Bluegrass music. Banjo, fiddle, guitar,...

Re: Don't look at your fingers!

I prefer to look at my fingers over looking at the audience. I saw a video of Jethro Burns once where he never looked at his fingers. Needless to say, I was impressed.

Re: I don't like the sound of tremolo.

Tremolo was the technique that saved my mandolin playing. I had been struggling with being able to get any speed for a long time. Then, one day I noticed that when I played tremolo, I used a...

Re: Thile's Loar: Not Enough Low End?

Thile is incredible. I would have been bothered by the twisted strap around the scroll if it was me. Of course, I don't know that tune, so…

    Re: Buzzing E Strings

Happens open or fretted. Both strings. I have raised the bridge on the treble side. Tweaked the truss rod to provide more relief.

At first, I thought maybe it might be a pick problem, but it...

    Buzzing E Strings

All strings are great, except the E strings on this Collings mandolin. They are buzzing like crazy.

    Suggestions?

Re: Don't despise me: Banjo question

The shaft that the string wraps around on the D-tuners will have different diameters. The thicker shafted one goes on the B-string, and the smaller shafted one is the third, or G-string.

I love Red Diamond mandolins. Before I bought mine, I was on a quest to acquire a Gil. After getting the RD, that quest was quenched.
  23. Re: so a song can be played in any key, but is it? Usually?

In my experience, fiddle tunes, like Billy in the Lowground, etc., are played in what is called the traditional key. Or the one that most fiddlers consider the correct key. There are a few...
