    Re: Monel strings

I bought some of these to try. It will be my first string experiment! I only got as far as taking the tp cover off the SOL, so I'm gonna wait until these arrive. :mandosmiley:
  2. Re: Care with old mandolins and modern cases...

Hmm. I didn't know this. The case it came in is a rectangular foam one, and it's kind of cool but a much worse fit. I probably won't be going anywhere with that mando anytime soon, though....
  3. Re: Care with old mandolins and modern cases...

Just tried the F2 in the Gator case I bought for the Morris. It appears to fit pretty nicely, and that was a pretty inexpensive case.
The whole neck is pretty much sitting flat on the support.

    What a cool story!
  5. Re: Care with old mandolins and modern cases...

Won't work for me, either. The case is molded foam. Guess I gotta start saving my pennies and get a case instead of another instrument ;)

Thanks for posting this, Bazz Jass. I just realized I have this issue, too.
  7. Re: Does your mando need a setup? Learn to do it yourself!

Awesome book. If you're handy at all, it will give you direction and confidence to tackle the job; if you're not, you'll know what you're talking about when you take it in to a professional.

Re: Is this how it starts?

    That's pretty funny :)

Don't think I need to indulge in any modifications. A couple more string changes, and I should have it down to a science (I hope!). Next time I'll try using a piece of...

Re: Is this how it starts?

Yes, that is what I ended up doing, wedged a small flathead screwdriver between the bottom of the tailpiece and the lip of the cover and then turned. It still wasn't easy.

So I take it you never disassembled the instrument?

Re: Is this how it starts?

I got the SOL out the other day, because I felt it needed some attention and didn't want it to "fall asleep" ;) . I'd decided to change the strings, and I spent over an hour fiddling around with the...

Wow. That looks like an ambitious undertaking!
Can't wait to watch your progress on it, though.

    Re: mandolin tattoos

I'm curious as to why the neck is detached from the body of the instrument.

That's one of the reasons my worn old F2 with new frets makes me so happy! :mandosmiley:

    Re: Silverangel custom green 2-point

Very unique and beautiful. I like the color and the thornbush motif. It reminds me of something the prince could have used to charm his way through the thicket to reach the enchanted princess

Where do you get them? Home Depot or Loews? In the plumbing department, I would assume.

Wait now, you guys, there isn't any weird sticky stuff on or in that case. It's just metal and plywood that used to be painted black. :) There is a kind of sketchy old pillow case inside that the...
