  7. Re: UK Luthier to build 4 String Solid Body Electric Mandolin

I understand the problem with 5 strings. I have tried 5 string fiddles and I have the same problem. On 5 string fiddles I am never sure which string I am playing.I suppose i could get used to it...
  8. Re: UK Luthier to build 4 String Solid Body Electric Mandolin

Just curious... you have a 5-string but you want a 4-string. Is there a particular reason?

Also, you like the 5-string you own made by Dave Farmiloe. Why not commission a 4-string from him?

    Re: Need help identifying bowlback

That is a good bowlback and you got that for a reasonable price. My very first mandolin was an American Conservatory. That actually was the midrange line for Lyon & Healy but were as well made and...

    Re: Need help identifying bowlback

Mike is correct. Most likely from the teens of the last century. That seems to be the height of mandolin craze for bowlbacks.

Probably made in Chicago. Lyon & Healy is one good guess. I have seen others with similar features and pickguard is similar in shape to their line of Washburn mandolins. Looks like it is in decent...

Re: New Kelley A model violin style

That is funny. I thought it was the opposite. I have one of the early carved Flatiron A5-2 which I bought new in 1983. It has x-bracing and has a bright focused sound that projects well. My ovals are...

I like the tone of that mandolin, at least what I can hear from the video. I agree with Bill that it has an almost oval hole sound or at least a hybridish and I think the tone bars make it sound a...

Re: New Kelley A model violin style

Sounds and looks great in that video, Skip. What strings do you have on it? Also what bracing did you use? I am guessing from the video that it isn't x-braced. Sounds relatively mellow.

    Re: Affordable 10 string mandolin/mandola?

Strange to have a .012 tuned to E for a 17" scale. D'Addario J74 has .011 as E strings and the scale is usually under 14". I woul go much lighter I would think.

BTW what exactly is an "offset top"?
