  1. Re: If you think changing strings on a mandolin is a pain...

Hammered dulcimer would be a PIA also. Years ago I had a Djangolin, which had a slotted headstock. if you think a regular mandolin is a pain, try one with a slotted headstock. Never again.

    Re: Guitar Bodied Mandola

Steve - This mandolin is one of two I built about 12 years ago. Basic shape is from Bob Benedetto's archtop guitar blueprint, size is reduced to something like 64% so the body meets the neck at the...

Re: Learning to read music for Mandolin

I was about to mention this book also. I bought it about 10 years ago, and just FINALLY pulled it out a few weeks ago. I don't know what scared me off for the last 50 years, but it has opened up a...

Looks fantastic - I also have a thing about guitar-shaped mandolins, as shown in my avatar.

Re: Tweaks for weak sounding E strings

Other than the weak E strings, how are you liking the El Rey?? I keep gazing at those photos, trying to think about what I could peddle to raise funds for one. Anxious to see one in person!
  8. Re: Article: 7th Annual Jim Richter Mandolin Camp

Fantastic news! Both NumberOneWife and I had a blast the other two times we attended. We are both hoping we can make it again this year. And for those who are wondering - NumberOneWife does not play...

Re: Does mandolin improve guitar technique

I believe that any time you spend with an instrument on your lap and a pick in your hand is time well spent. Probably 45 years ago I worked out (on guitar) a "Medley Of Irish Fiddle Tunes" off David...
  12. Re: chord melody by Aaron Weinstein: YOU'RE DRIVING ME CRAZY!

Re: What's The One That Got Away?

In the late 70s I was owner of a Fender guitar called the Hand-Carved LTD Archtop. The LTD was an produced for just a few years, built by a couple guys at their shop, under the direction of Roger...

  15. Re: Y'all missed some great mandolin playing in Asheville

Man, I would LOVE to make it to one of their gigs - sadly, none even remotely near us. Maybe next time. From what I'm hearing about these shows, seems like this may not wind up being a one-off tour.

Wow, those were some good days back on flatpick-l!! So far back I couldn't even put a date on it. It seemed so leading-edge at the time LOL.

    Re: Rockin' the Dulcimer!

I have a gifted musician friend who used to plug his Appalachian Dulcimer into a small practice amp and crank out The Star Spangled Banner a la Jimi Hendrix - it is a wonder to behold!

    Re: Improvising

What a fantastic idea! I have done this while mindlessly noodling around with various tunes, but never thought to do it in any organized manner. This could be a great ear-opener.

  21. Re: The Guitars (and Mandolins) of Ken Burns' Country Music

What has amazed me is the number of Fender Shenandoah guitars (with the Stratocaster-style peghead) that keep popping up. I didn't know anybody except the VERY young Neil Diamond ever played one of...

Re: String journey on a Collings MT

I've always been a huge fan of D'Addario strings on both guitar and mandolin. Electric, acoustic, you name it. But when I was going through this same journey, I felt the D-Addario EFW74 flatwounds...

Another helpful tip re: rewiring archtop instruments - surgical tubing is a great way to fish things into a hollow or semi-hollow instrument. 2-foot sections of surgical tube, one for each pot. The...
