Re: Opera singer guitarist in need of help

Yes, but it is easier for a mandolinist to sing and play than for a singer (even with guitar background) to play and sing. If the OP succceed that would be great, of course. But if I was a show...

Re: Opera singer guitarist in need of help

I also agree the prop bowlback mandolin with someone else playing at the backstage is the way to go. Has always been the way in all theatres.

Re: Gelas mandolin family at Bernunzio's

Gelas mandobasses, mandochellos and guitars certainly do not come up for sale very often, but Gelas type mandolins (especially flatbacks) are readily available in Europe, sometimes for less than...
  4. Re: Fratelli Calace Napoli-Catania line of instruments

The instrument has just came back from France where it was restored by Dave Hynds and gee, what a beautiful instrument it is:

And it plays like a dream...
  5. Re: Seeking information on great-grandfather's mandolin

It is repairable. Try www.mandolinluthier.com. Dave is in France, reasonably priced and he specialize in repairing ruined bowlbacks like yours.

Re: Historical mandolins and cultural preferences

Hi Eugene. Did you happen to photograph that odd Embergher? I'd be very interested to see the pics. PM me if for any reason publishing here is not appropriate. Thanks.

Re: Help identify Italian antique mandolin

Looks like US-made mandolin to me, too. Alas, family legends are not always true.
  9. Re: G.Puglisi Reale & Figli mandolin -restoration

I'd check for small cracks, whether the neck is straight and the action is not too high. Also whether frets are worn. I can't see any obvious damage from the photographs, so it may not need any...
  10. Re: G.Puglisi Reale & Figli mandolin -restoration

It is a nice Puglisi, made in the Roman style. A simple model, but they were usually well made and can sound pretty good. Likely to be made before 1917. There is usually a year printed in the lower...
  11. Re: Need help in identifying an old bolwback mandolin

Looks American to me, probably Chicago-made. I am not a big expert in American bowlbacks. Hope more experienced folks will chime in soon.
  12. Re: Fratelli Tassinari (Napoli) -Help with Info and Value

Value is not high, a couple of hundred dollars at best. Tassinari is not particulary sought after maker.

Re: Calace mandolin, 1926 - value?

August, Calace is normally not an issue. I guess partly because for them being around all that time and perhaps dealing with the impersonators. Plus I can only think of Garofalo, as the student, who...

Re: Calace mandolin, 1926 - value?

Those bushes appear to be bone even on my 1929 Calace. The black ones on some German instruments are probably bakelite. Actually celluloid was one of the first plastics and it was widely used as...
  15. Re: Help identifying an old bowl back mandolin...

That Carmelo Catania is a copy (or I'd rather say inspired by) Embergher, which had a zero fret in some models and that's why it is there. Zero fret was very rarely used in Italian bowlbacks, but...
  16. Re: Help identifying an old bowl back mandolin...

Looks German to me... zero fret, slotted head, typlical scratchplate. Probably 1930-40's. (Or could be later, as post-war Saxony factories made very similar instruments to pre-war stock.) Action...

Re: Historical mandolins and cultural preferences

Hello Peter. Mandolins lined inside with spruce shavings rather than paper is a feature of a Roman school of mandolin making. Your mandolin could be made by a Roman luthier or someone fond of Roman...

Re: Mandolin sound changing over time

Well, there are myths and beliefs. And they change over time. Torres, the famous guitar luthier, believed that wood type for the guitar back has nothing to do with the sound. He built a papier-mache...
