With a standard Snark tuner, how does one dial in a 432?
I have a Mike Black oval hole A2z with Virzi. I like it. The sound has slight overtones which gives a fuller sound to my hearing.
Simple history here.
1976 Laminated top mandolin, forgot brand name - Got me started. Don't remember what happened to it. Either gave it away or sold cheap.
1979 Givens A mandolin - Called Bob...
My tap water is pretty hard (deep groundwater source) so I have a water softener that exchanges the hardness chemicals (Ca, Mg) with sodium (Na). I found that my evaporative humidifier paper wicks...
Congrats, journeybear! :mandosmiley:
One more post and I will hit 90! (Not in age yet, happily.)
Another thing I learned during my bedbug period is that the Department of Health in my state (Minnesota) has bedbug-sniffing dogs available. I learned this because some colleagues called the DoH to...
Sorry to read of your dilemma journeybear and I can commiserate since we went through a similar episode several years ago. I had inadvertently hauled some bedbugs home to our bedroom from an...
Exactly. I own a Givens and it is LOUD. There are a few Givens that will not crack the $3k price, but most of the later ones will sell for $4k-$6k for A models.
However, I would consider a...
Bought first mandolin in 1976 as a poor college student ($60). Learned some chords and fiddle tunes. Graduated and got a job. First paycheck went to Bob Givens in Sandpoint, ID, for one of his A...
It looks like an irradiated guitar. Some luthier near Chernobyl. :whistling:
Congrats on the catch!
That looks like the Weber model that Jeff Spirko of Southern Gothic uses. Example below. You need to learn some Cajun music now.

I like the A style. When I bought a Givens back in 1978, I had the choice of an A for $675 or an F for $950. It was a no-brainer. These days, the price differential can be closer to two times higher...
Van Halen and Hendrix played during your lifetime, I suspect, which is why you would put them on the Mt. Rushmore of guitarists. I don't dispute that, but there were earlier guitarists who changed...
I was lucky enough to meet Randy a few years ago in Willmar, Minnesota, in a music store. He had brought a couple of guitar playing students of his along to play a store concert. They gave a workshop...

Interesting thread. I should check out this portion of the Cafe more often.
Back when I was a grad student in Forest Engineering at Oregon State (or is it Oregon-State?), I wrote a paper reporting...

Wow! That Hyde is a nice looking mandolin, other than the fact it is an F style. How is it for holding tune across all the frets? My National needs to be tuned slightly flat on the nut in order for...
I played a one-hour set on the street during "Crazy Daze", the single day of the summer when Main Street gets shut down to vehicle traffic and only foot traffic is allowed. Vendors set up on the...
No, I had not heard that extra verse. Thanks! A friend of mine who does this song at Farmers Markets on the west coast changed the lyric "Old man garlic dropped dead with the colic" to "Old man...
You are welcome; glad to be of assistance. However, that is not the Barnyard Dance version to which I was referring. With two different songs having the same title, it is confusing.
This is the...

I am with you on this. Big hunk of wood getting in the way of viewing the higher registers. Thus, I will answer your question: How did the "curl" evolve? Poorly.

Now that the summer outdoor season is upon us, I bought a pair of those wrist sweat bands that basketball players use. I got the idea after a sweaty, 2-hour farmers market gig last summer, and just...
