    Re: Original instrumental: The Equinoctials

Since this post continues to get looked at (a lot - who ARE all you people, anyway? :)), let's put a Soundcloud player in:

    Re: If you jam . . . .

    You'd be fine by me.

Years ago I took a workshop presented by Seth Rosen, a departed musician that I miss. Seth talked about playing "secondary rhythm", meaning that in many band/jam situations...

    Re: If you jam . . . .

I play 'em all the time. But I'm not generally playing bluegrass, where chop chords are usually standard.

Re: Is this how it starts?

I use one of these to attach to the peghead (probably somebody makes one without a logo).

    Re: Dammit!

I popped a tendon in my left hand a few years ago - splinted for 3 months (but no surgery, thank goodness). I worked on lap steel.

So maybe some slide mando for a while?

    Original instrumental: The Equinoctials

Somewhat original, anyway. (Has a 5-second leader at the start.)

    Re: Amy Helm chord form

I use my thumb a lot on guitar, and some on mando, but this form of power chord is kind of painful.

Re: Counting Tree Growth Lines ?

Count just one side of a book-matched top. The number of growth rings (dark+ light line = 1 ring) is the number of years of growth in the top wood.

Of course, the tree itself may have been much...

    Re: Amy Helm chord form

She was definitely actually playing at the show I saw. For one song (Mandolin Wind), she was alternating between a Bb5 played in the form in the picture and an F chord 5301 low to high. I tried it...

    Re: beside the mandolin.

Now that I'm (very close to being) retired I decided to try and learn clawhammer, which has interested me for a long, long time. I started with a Deering, and recently got a Rickard.

Re: Not much of a mando culture in my area

I don't play bluegrass, so I'm generally the only mando player when I play out. I did fish a colleague into buying a 20s Gibson A, though, so now there's two of us.
