I'm still trying to figure out what mandolin design had a soundpost.

I like the "give yourself permission to suck at it while you’re “in training” " part.

    Re: Pick Hold Issues

Well I certainly am coming from the more classical side of mandolin technique; as in using "straight teardrop kind of pick (which is what I use on a guitar anyhow)"
I cannot play well with a "Dawg"...

I'm not sure I agree...he plays well with that non-fist grip on the pick.

Re: Internal vs external K& K piezo

I've found that a temporary external mounting of a K and K twin lets you find the "sweet spot" for pickup placement - and then you can install it internally.

    VLC player

    https://www.videolan.org/vlc/

It can play and convert almost any format and can slow music down - and it's also free.

Re: Bach Prelude No 1 in C for Mandolin

My impression is that the fingering needs to be adjusted to be more practical on mandolin.

  11. Re: multi-instrumentalists: how do you manage your time?

I just play what I feel like at any time...sometimes I'm more interested in mandolin, other times guitar and bass, other times Greek bouzouki, baglama saz, balalaika, tenor banjo, lap steel...there's...

    Re: Why play Mandolin?

I was already learning string bass, electric bass, guitar and tenor banjo circa 1971; I was in a musical city, New Orleans (and at the time it had zero Bluegrass or ITM music happening); I was from a...

Re: Sicilian Luthiers Building Mandolins in 2021

Well, flatbacks in the Italian style at least! I wish I owned some Sicilian mandolins of any sort.

And I am cheering on this search for Sicilian bowl backs. :)

  15. Re: How many different F5s does Dave Apollon play in these Vitap

If I recall it was his original bowlback that was buried with Apollon.

BTW, that article is interesting but may have a couple of factual errors in it, such as the claim that the Dinicu piece was...
  16. Re: Contemporary Christian Music with Mandolin Solo???

No problem, I understand what you were saying, thanks.

Good - I have to do much the same thing depending on the range of the song, so as to fit the singers.
  17. Re: Contemporary Christian Music with Mandolin Solo???

Do any of y'all play in a Catholic church?

uh-huh. And I'm the organist at our Catholic church.

and occasional guitar and mandolin...but mostly organ. Even if it's just a keyboard...

My buddy, you always prove that "clowns" are wise men.

    And clowns are entertainers.!

    All the best!

uh, for those that do not know, Joe was a student of Jethro, and it shows when he plays.

Re: Tips for better rhythm playing

Well, certainly not in the Balkans, Greece, etc.!

And as much as I love my kalamatianos, zeibekikos, etc. one can be a very creditable mandolinist in many genres only playing 2/4, 3/4, 6/8, 4/4,...

Not just that, but play them with great style and finesse - and he was an entertainment act.

  23. Re: How many different F5s does Dave Apollon play in these Vitap

Easy, if you grew up doing that with a bowlback.:)

And he's not edging out a 5 string banjo on full throttle to the single microphone..

Great player! as we all know
  24. Re: Logic Pro: Best effects for mandolin recording

That's because so many people abuse compression!

A well-compressed track can still have dynamics - it's all about the settings and keeping things subtle.

Good luck with the mandolin teachers; just make sure they can teach you the Italian/classical style you want to learn. :)
