Anyone want to go down the fiddle rabbit hole...... Wonder what Andrea A. and Antonio S. would have to say?
A late teens / early twenty's / A2/A4 or snakehead that actually IS in excellent condition at a price I can justify.
I make up sets for my Clark OM from Pearse PB singles. 20.5" scale.... .052, .034, .023, .013. The tailpiece takes ball end strings, but one could always remove the balls.
Congrats! My RA-5 is two years older than yours... and has cured my MAS completely...... well except for finding a Gibson Oval from the twenties at a price I can justify.:)
I'll stick with my Clarke OM and Don Noon fiddle thanks very much.

I have a Clark OM with a 20.25 scale. The fretboard is radiused and very comfortable.
Just to take this in the opposite direction.........
I string my old Martin 12 string guitar [D12-18] as a 10 string.
Low E & A are single strings
D/G/b/e courses are unison pairs like a...
I have a Regal whose cone I replaced with a Quarterman, Spider replaced and tuned to fit...... Sounds very "Sweet" to me.
After a few years with my unison strung Clark OM.... I've even changed my old Martin D12-18 to a 10 string with a Single E and A and unison string D,G,b,e...... have to say Like it much better and...
Only one mandolin..... Ratliff RA-5......

[Full disclosure though..... 9-acoustic guitars. 3-electric guitars. 3- fiddles and a Harmonium.... so I'm just as sick as anyone...
Great article by Graham McDonald in the winter edition of the Guild of American Luthiers periodical. "Field Guide to Mandolins"
Seamus Egan of Solas is no slouch either when he puts down his banjo and picks up the "gut string".
162549I had one that belonged to a close friend come in with some of the same issues ++++! My friend, a house carpenter had tried to "correct" the belly by glueing [with construction adhesive] a 2.5"...
Was online at noon,,, I thought,,, to purchase tickets for the Seattle show.... The whole main floor must have had folks refreshing with fingers posed.... sold out by 12:02. Did get balcony tickets!
Nice! Agreed Kitchen/Porch music is the best.
BTW....did I see a busted mando string flashing in the ambient light???:mandosmiley:
Chris Thiele with the closed hand..... Tim O'Brien with the open.
Think it can go either way...... I'd be delighted with 20% of either's capability.
My first instrument was guitar in the 50's and there was precious little available made left-handed.... so I just played the same as "everyone else".... As I picked up other instruments over the...
I built a "Stratocaster" with a Birdseye neck.... My violin knives handles are made from the off cuts..... They all sound just fine.:)
Nice!!!! If I didn't have a 20 year old RA5 of Audie's I'd sure be looking to have one of his "F's".
Were I you... I'd consider investing in one of those "Different Drums". [You march kinda funny] :)
Over here in the colonies Vest pockets work just as well as those posh Waistcoat pockets.
The ultimate "Washtub Bass"!!! Love it thanks!
Remember all that "French Polish" is a method or technique to apply a finish.... not "a finish"
Shellac is the finish....processed bug poop, dissolved in alcohol, applied with a bit of oil added...
