    Re: OM Setup

To me they are pretty similar, nut height is slightly higher than a mando, and bridge height is determined by string buzz like always, so nothing unusual about an OM that I know of. String tension...

    Re: Multi-track Recording?

A DAW + a computer is the easiest (HW easiest, but have to learn the software, but there are many tutorials on the web).

Cubase elements + Scarlett 2i2 + a good mic has been all I need.

    If you...

    Re: Fixing a microphonic pickup

Wow, those covers are a perfect fit, I'll give them a try.

I am pretty certain the OEM covers are ferrous, which is the root of the problem. Replacing the covers is the best solution.

    Re: Fixing a microphonic pickup

This is a soapbar electric guitar humbucker pickup, see the Eastwood Airline Mandola if you want more details.

The 300W soldering gun got it apart no problem, and it was filled with wax, so adding...
  5. Re: What is the most mandolins you've owned at one time?

Ok, first one to register a name that contains hoarder wins. mandohoarder, stringhorder, hoarderofmusicaloddities...

I like that last one. I call dibs. :-)

    Although mandoaccumulator may have...

    Re: Fixing a microphonic pickup

Tried to fix it today, my 100w soldering gun couldn't touch it, so I just lowered the pickup, seems fine, I think I like it better like this. :-)

But I ordered a 300w gun too, I will try again at...

    Fixing a microphonic pickup

So I have two eastwood airline mandolas, which came with what I learned are called 'microphonic' pickups. This is a new term for me, never knew what it was until I got one by accident. Basically,...
  8. Re: Small speakers revisited, and we have a new winner: Sony XB-2

The Sony has no modelling, can't go quite as loud as the THR-10, it's just a clean PA speaker (all-range unlike a guitar amp like the lunchbox mentioned above), I was only comparing the clean sounds...

    Re: Picking faster?

I'm a Banjo Ben student myself too. :-)

I was thinking of something more like 1-1 Skype lessons, something like what Pete Martin does.

I know he can play that fast, and once tried to explain it...

    Re: Picking faster?

That's way beyond me, my top speed is 100-110 bpm, and consistent clean is closer to 90ish.

I have had some pretty good teachers try to explain it, mostly stuff about rest strokes, but I have not...

    Re: 18" scale mandola/tenor leads

Davy Stuart responded and said he can export to the US, Paul Hathway can't yet. The issue is the instrument must be below $1,000 or not use rosewood.

Davy Stuart also said he would build anything...

    Re: Octave sound diffence?

Hey Bob, I proposed the same build idea as yours to Davy Stuart (he has an 18" mandola), meaning deeper sides (OM depth) and all other parameters the same. He is thinking about it, and is able to...

    Re: Octave sound diffence?

Pls tell where I can get an 18.5" scale OM. :-)
I started a thread on this yesterday.
Although I would prefer flat-top, they are so rare I may not have a choice.

    Re: 18" scale mandola/tenor leads

Paul Hathaway uses rosewood, and said he cannot export them to the USA right now, is planning alternate fingerboard options in the next 18 months.

Waiting for Davy Stuart to see his response.

Re: Trying to make a modest leap...

I'm gonna say going from a $150ish instrument to a $1kish instrument is a big leap. You won't be disappointed if you get a good one, and that's what the folks are here to help with. :-)

    Also,...

    18" scale mandola/tenor leads

I have dreamed of an 18" scale acoustic mandola that can be restrung as a tenor (GDAE), or just a tenor of that scale, and thought it was probably a crazy idea or a lost cause.

    But I found some...

    Re: Beware EVOs

Did the fret height change? Altering string height can change tone, and some instruments are more sensitive to this than others. Low frets in particular can mute or darken the tone slightly...

Re: String gauges for GDAE on electric tenor

To me its about starting with a string tension you like and then adjusting for string balance as needed.

If you want to bend, go lighter, if not, heavier may be your thing.

    I lean towards the...

Re: Tenor Guitar Gallery & Sightings

Here is my converted Eastman Airline e-mandola, converted to a tenor e-guitar, it plays and sounds fantastic, 18" scale lets me do things I can't on longer scale tenors.

    I am currently taking...
