  1. Re: Nancy Blake Playing McMichen’s Reel + Jeff Davis on a Gibson

Norman and Nancy told some amazing and funny stories at Monroe Camp and enthusiastically answered lots of questions from all of us. Someone needs to record them for hours and write it all down. I'm...

Re: post a video of yourself

The Dead March is a tune Bill Monroe learned from his Uncle Pen and included on his "Uncle Pen" album. This is a collaboration between Bruce (bbcee) and me. Bruce has the mandolin melody (first and...

    Re: Old Grimes

Great playing, Dave, and a fine tune. Love to play this one. I've seen this attributed to Norman Blake and it appears on his "Just Gimme Something I'm Used To" album, but it may be a trad. Do Chris...

Re: Gibson finally fixed their fretboards

In the second photo, the frets extend the lines of the bottom of the 2 cutouts across the fretboard in a pleasing way. In the first photo, the frets seem randomly placed.

Re: Gibson finally fixed their fretboards

Look at how the frets line up with the florida cutouts on the first and second pictures in the original post. In the first picture, they don't. In the second picture, they do. On Lloyd Loar...

Re: Gibson finally fixed their fretboards

Yes, Jim, that F4 scroll looks just right.

Gibson must have a bunch of fretboards slotted both ways and pick one at random (like the Gibson factory of old) to put on their mandolins. There's a...

    Gibson finally fixed their fretboards

When did this happen? Such a small thing but it looks so much better. Frets line up correctly on the florida.

    Wrong for a long time.

    Re: Crossrock Vintage wood case

Just looking at the picture, I don't like the lid padding putting pressure on the bridge. Should be over the neck and tailpiece only.

Re: The pulse of a tune

I tend to think of fiddle bowing shuffle patterns rather than just the hornpipe rhythm/swing. There's a lot of them. The fiddle shuffle really adds the pulse to the tunes. Mike Compton really gets...

Really sad to hear this. John was a wonderful composer and I enjoyed listening to and playing the tunes he wrote. An inspiration. RIP.

    Re: Need help valuing mandolin.

Interesting catalog copy, Jim. The one pictured by the OP has the pickguard screwed into the top like a Shutt, not elevated with a support like the catalog pic and the pic from lenf12. Maybe they...

I love you have it hanging on a nail in the pics. The picture of you holding it tells the whole story. One happy camper. Congrats!

Also a friend of Dawg and a witness to lots of history when Dawg music was forming. A brilliant artist who create some amazing pieces in glass. RIP Arthur.

The pickguard cutout for the ff hole is Shutt-like as well. A very cool and rare instrument.

Thanks for the video link. Mike played that Model 4 all Monroe Camp last week. An amazing mandolin that held up just fine amidst all the fine F5's.

Re: Do You Baby Your Mandolin?

I heard one of the high-end luthiers describe his owners as players or polishers. I'm a player. I don't abuse my mandolins but I don't baby them. I play them.
