  1. Re: Bach Cello Suites arranged for CGDA instruments/Octave Mandol

Belbein, what clef do you prefer? If you read bass or alto, there are tons of versions for cello and viola.

If you are looking for notation in treble clef, there is one more issue: what key do you...

More proof that the arts save lives. Also proof that second chances can pay off.

  5. Re: Please help me choose a beginner instrument

I had a Kentucky 272 (same as the 250 series, but oval-hole) and it was really nice for the price. Eastman puts out a good mandolin too.

You are reading the classifieds twice a day, aren't you?...
  6. Re: Unexpected things/benefits about playing mandolin

Learning mandolin has led me to all sorts of music I wasn't too familiar with before, and learning something new is always a worthy pursuit. The best part, though, is that it has led me to some...

    Re: Why Mandolin?

I found a nice, handbuilt F5 in an antique store, with a hard case and 3" hand-tooled leather strap for $145. Bought it to keep it out of the hands of the interior decoration set—I could just see it...

    Re: Sight read tab?

Ugh. Without getting off into the weeds about intonation and temperament, in a non-fretted world there is a difference between a C# and a Db. This would totally destroy the understanding that there...

    Re: Sight read tab?

One big difference between classical and folk traditions, Sblock, is that you can't use tab on a non-fretted stringed instrument. When studying a violin-family instrument there's no alternative to...

    Re: Sight read tab?

    Exactly.

I don't understand the perception that someone playing from dots is necessarily playing in a stilted manner. Sblock's example of the violinist has nothing to do with him using printed...

Aidan, I printed out "A Tune for Fee" when you provide the link last spring. I play it almost every day. Besides being a very pretty tune, it includes every note in first position on the mandolin,...

    Re: Mandolin "Slurs"

I'm curious why this etude was included in a mandolin version of Wohlfahrt. As I remember from a bunch of decades ago, this particular exercise is primarily a right-hand study, learning to play the...

    Re: Question on staccato marking

You would be most likely to see the slur with staccato over notes of the same pitch. The marking implies the notes are connected, but have a slight emphasis at the beginning of each to mark the...

    Re: Question on staccato marking

That would signify four distinct, well-separated notes. No tremolo. (There isn't a slur over them, is there? That could change things.)

Re: What to call this position?

In viola pedagogy half position is a big deal. I had never heard the term as a violinist, but violists are all over it. Good trick to know.

Dan, I asked them about armrests. They said six months, then looked up the number for me and told me when the finish was finished on mine. They're really helpful, and respond to email pretty quickly.
