Renn Fair! Didn't think of that. It does def look home made, and with the label and the stars on the interesting contraption for attaching the strings it does look the part.

Re: Interesting "mandolino" by DW Snyder

Even up close it's hard to tell. It could be 1985 or 1955. It looks like some date was written, then corrected.

    Interesting "mandolino" by DW Snyder

I bought this interesting "mandolino" on eBay, sold by Goodwill in Salinas, CA. The label says it's by D.W. Snyder of Santa Cruz, and has 4 strings with friction pegs. I can't find DW Snyder on the...

Re: European Mandola Tuning and Strings

To the OP: This is probably way late and there are other posts about this throughout this site, but to be able to tune a mandola GDAE, the scale length has to be at least 17". I have a European...

Re: Old Milanese Mandolin 1890 c. project on eBay

Thank you for the info, Jim. I had difficulty finding information on strings for a Lombardic/Milanese. Your experience with the gut strings and Aquila are helpful.

Re: Made by Giovanni Marino de Tulio 1896

From my limited experience I know whether the neck is straight or not is critical, especially since repairs on the neck can be cost prohibitive. The narrow fluted back Make this a high end instrument...

Re: Imported a mandolin with tortoise shell - CITES

The mandolin is quite amazing. The neck is a little thinner than modern mandolins, but the tone is beautiful. I can’t believe I’m playing a 250 year-old mandolin.

Re: Old Milanese Mandolin 1890 c. project on eBay

As a matter of fact, the luthier (Who is in Southern Switzerland) did say that the Swiss are not interested in antique mandolins so there isn’t much of a market there for him. He does have a couple...

Re: Old Milanese Mandolin 1890 c. project on eBay

There seems to be mandolins with different numbers of strings: Baroque mandolins have 6 courses or 12 strings, Cremona mandolins have 4 strings. From what I’ve seen Milanese & Lombardi mandolins...
