    Re: Gibson "F-3"

The F-3 may be the rarest catalogued model Gibson ever made . . . with the plain style F close behind.

    Re: Gibson "F-3"

There's one for sale at Player's Vintage Instruments in California.
An interesting note-- Lowell Levinger, the proprietor, was the guitarist for The Youngbloods.

Re: Gibson mandolin face repair needed.

A picture might help us to assess the damage, but . . .
If the top has been thinned by an amateur, it sounds like it might be a possible candidate for a new top.

You might want to consult a...

Re: Aluminum saddle on vintage Gibson ovals

I have a 'teens A model set up with one. It works well on this particular mandolin, and sounds considerably better than it did with the original one-piece bridge.
    It increased the mandolin's...

    Re: 1925 Martin AK Mandolin

Martin made koa instruments from the late 1910's until 1940. The first koa mandolin was built in 1918. AK mandolins were made in standard production from 1921 until 1937. A few BK mandolins were...

    Re: Gibson A1 (requesting information)

1912 going by "Spann's Guide to Gibson."

We would need to see pictures of the back and sides and the case to correctly evaluate the value.
If the finish is all original and not heavily worn, and...

Re: First repair - all advice welcome

Start reading the "Items for luthiers" pages on frets.com. Buy and read "Complete Guitar Repair" by Hideo Kamimoto. Find someone who will let you look over their shoulder.

  9. Re: How Many Loar Era A style mandolins were made of each kind?

So far as I can gather, there are no surviving records of actual production numbers from this period. Any lists we have are estimates, extrapolated from catalog descriptions and known surviving...

    Re: Lyon an Healy?

That looks like a nice instrument. I like the look of the figure in the back. Except for the missing tailpiece cover, it appears to be original.
Unless the bids go up considerably, that's a lot of...

    Re: Gibson Year Date

All that I contribute that a well-established vintage dealer is listing a near very clean 1961 F-5 for $5000, and it has been on the market for quite a long time. We can infer from this that $5000...

Re: What's the deal with Vintage F4s?

If I could make a generalization about the tone of F-4's, it would be that they tend to be "clear-toned," tend to sustain a note longer than an F-5, and are less percussive than an F-5.

    It is...

    Re: Gibson Year Date

That number could also have been used in 1974 or 75, which was during Gibson's worst period.

If it's an F-5 and has dots in the fingerboard, it was made in the '60's. If it has fancy fingerboard...

Re: Which Model Gibson Is This from about 1938?

The photos are not clear enough to evaluate the instrument really well, but to me, the bridge appears to be a replacement.
I'd like to see clearer photos before signing off on the finish.
  16. Re: What should i'l buy to clean the neck and the frets?

Aerosol furniture polishes such as Lemon Pledge are not suitable for use on instruments. Many of them contain silicone, which should not be used on varnished or lacquered surfaces.

    Re: Fret Slot Depth

A slot .03" deeper than the tang is probably within the acceptable range. Too shallow a slot, and the fret won't seat correctly. It is said by some folks that if the slots are very much deeper than...
  20. Re: Gibson Master Model vs. Ellis F5 with all of his highest opti

    Re: Martin Style A Mandolin - EFW74?

The heaviest I would be willing to use on an old Martin or Vega cant-top mandolin would be 10 1/2 - 14 - 24 - 38.

These instruments are much more lightly built than a Gibson carved top mandolin. ...

Re: Olive oil staining on top?

You might try wiping it down with naphtha, using a fresh section of cloth for each stroke.
Then, give it some time to sit.
Olive oil does evaporate, but it takes a long time.
  23. Re: Gibson Master Model vs. Ellis F5 with all of his highest opti

There's a lot to choose from in that price range, and, if you include some of the makers who are very good but not yet well known, less expensive.

In Nashville now, if you go to both Gruhn's and...

Re: Help needed - Kalamazoo KM-21

Gibson was also X-bracing at least some of their standard and upper line archtop guitars during that same period. I had an X-braced L-7 on the bench last year.
