    Re: Studying Sam Bush

Hearing Sam Bush at a festival inspired me to pick up a mandolin, like hordes of others on this site. Challenging player to emulate to say the least. Edgar Meyer described him in an interview as "the...

    Re: NYT Spelling Bee Game

The last time this puzzle combination appeared was 12/31/22. I sent them an email that day making the case for mandola to be included. Boilerplate response was not reassuring, and here we are...

    Re: Self-taught vs. …not!

Accountability is a key aspect of taking lessons from a live human for me whether it's for mandolin or chess. If a teacher puts together a thoughtful lesson for me to work on I feel it's...

Re: Anyone ever deal with Acoustic Discs

Dawg is firmly planted on my Mount Rushmore so naturally I've made some purchases, never an issue. Love the old Frets magazine articles in his mandolin workshop books.

    Re: Bowlback Advice

Dave Hynds, a luthier based in France, restores bowlbacks and then sells them. He has models in your price range and more importantly you can feel confident you will receive a playable instrument. I...

    Re: Gibson Mandobass #87717

Came across a scroll on an old bass forum thread, and someone there did good internet detective work on its origin. The image is larger in the linked thread.

    Re: Gibson Mandobass #87717

Edgar Meyer: "Mike(Marshall) plays the mandolin, mandola, and mandocello but also owns one of the most worthless instruments on the planet- a mandobass."

Re: Lyon & Healy "Style B"

Hey there fellow Durhmite and L&H owner!

I have #32 of the Style-B model, likely built in 1917, which does not have a zero fret or thigh support appendage. Mine needed setup work in the bridge and...

Re: Good free tuner Apps that work with mandolin?

I stopped using apps to tune because I'd get distracted by an email or text then forgot why I opened my phone lol. Got a clip-on tuner for $15 that's even easier to use and tunes by vibrations rather...

    Re: Early 1900s Calace

I concur from a place of enormous bias. Good design elements yet simple. The pickguard and headstock instantly appealed to me I first saw the mandolin.

The sound coming from the mandolin/strings...

    Re: Early 1900s Calace

    Thanks Mick.

I may use a similar footstand for now with the hope of graduating to lazier postures in the future. :)

Dave still has the photos on his site for now-...

    Re: Early 1900s Calace

The mandolin completed its trip across the pond and now has those Dogals strung. It's a fine instrument and Dave did a great job on the setup. Nice addition to the collection.

    Adjusting to sitting...

Thanks again Jim! I'll put those strings on with haste once it arrives.

  20. Re: Lost in my search of a mandolin for classical music

Jim continues to guide me well and I'm very grateful. Now is a good time to just enjoy the thing.

Appointment is set for then but he mentioned possibility of doing it a couple weeks earlier....
  21. Re: Lost in my search of a mandolin for classical music

He did include the light set Jim, they're on the mandolin now and sound great. I was surprised to learn they were the light set because they produce a great range of volume.

    The nut and bridge...

I'll steer clear of those then, not seeing many other choices though for flatwounds.
  23. Re: Lost in my search of a mandolin for classical music

I'm going to try D'Addario EFW74's with gauges 11-15-26-36. I'd like to try several flatwound sets and choose a winner before the nut and bridge adjustments are done. Any suggestions are more than...

Yes you're right. I told him I thought they were the heavier ones mistakenly.
  25. Re: Lost in my search of a mandolin for classical music

Yes, madly and completely. Very pleased to say I'm the owner of #32 and the luthier who urged caution has given this mandolin a clean bill of health. This instrument feels, plays, and sounds amazing....
