Re: any repair for a pinky wear spot.

There are so many more important aspects to the decision to buy a particular instrument, IMO, I can't see pinky wear being a deal breaker.

I am curios however. Maybe pinky wear is a more...

Re: Newbie here, suffering from analysis paralysis

I know the original poster has chosen and I wish him a ton of fun.

For everyone else reading this thread, I really think one overlooks flat tops at their peril. Especially when on a limited...

    Re: I Don't Do Tab

There is nothing inherently bad, wrong, lazy, sneaky, low class, embarrassing, or fattening about using Tab. Nothing. At all. No reason to be sheepish about it.

If you would like to play by ear,...

Re: Figuring out chords from sheet music?

If I am not in a hurry I play the tune and listen and try and hear the chord changes. At first this skill was totally lost on me, but gradually it is getting there. Have someone play the sheet music...

    Re: Any arguments AGAINST MAS?

    Nah.

They just don't share it with the audience. But looking through the pages of Fretboard Journal, or many youtubes, great musicians worry and fret over their instruments and their care and...
  6. Re: PayPal fraud in prograess (have you smelled this one before)?

    Run. Run run.

When I was a kid I in NY City and momentarily got separated from my parents. I was watching a small crowd around a 3 card monty scammer. I knew it was as scam but i was so curious. I...

Re: 3 hours of practice a day?

I know quite a few folks who see practice has hard and cop out by saying "I don't really need to get that good" or worse, "I am never going to get that good."

But its like magic, just playing...

Re: 3 hours of practice a day?

    My opinions follow.

Lets get real. Those who are practicing 3 or more hours a day are not spending time reading this thread. Chris Thile is reported to practice and or work on music 8 hours a day....
  10. Re: Do you ever sing the notes of a tune while you play it?

The more body parts you can get involved the better. Sing, tap feet, move around, whatever.

    Re: Who doesn't memorize tunes/songs?

I was where you are. For a long time. It can change. And eventually without effort. I don't go about specifically memorizing anything, just after awhile I remember it. But that is now, not back then....

    Re: Loosening strings

I think long term, if the instruments are properly in cases and stowed safely, and not subject to bumps and grinds or changes in air pressure, it is better to leave the strings at full tension. And...

    :)) So true.

We can get to the point of just exchanging page numbers in some huge tune book we all acquired.

    Re: I Don't Do Tab

I have had transcendent experiences playing with folks that cannot read. Learning and teaching and sharing delicious old tidbits of music. I have tried to capture that experience in my fictional...

    Re: I Don't Do Tab

I agree of course, and well said. But in reality we don't need anyone to allow us anything. Just go after the world and its experiences with both hands, and be gentle to those out there who will...

    Re: I Don't Do Tab

I think we are talking across each other a bit. Learning music from notation of some kind is pretty old school as well.

I know more than a few formally educated in music who are lost without...

    Re: I Don't Do Tab

Also one doesn't subtract from the other. Learning to read does not take away from learning by ear. One skill isn't pushed out by the other.

    Re: I Don't Do Tab

It is not one or the other. Everything you don't know limits you.

Learning by hear has great benefits. Learning to read also has gigantic benefits, tab and/or notation.

    One doesn't rule out the...

    Re: Any arguments AGAINST MAS?

    Re: Chinese mandolins

I am thinking you can do better for the same or not much more.

Don't over look flat top mandolins. You can likely get a very nice flat top, with great workmanship and materials, for not a whole...
  25. Re: Finished Notation for the Tab Addicted Mandolinsit Now What?

I would separate playing from theory. Both are important, but theory you learn, like anything else, by studying it. Even take a course at the community college. Playing you can only do with practice....
