Re: Modes of the diatonic scale?

It’s like this for me too (at the moment). I tend to see modes geographically, so a mode centre is actually on the fretboard with tones or colours in certain directions and distances.
    To learn how...

Re: Jug Band Music in New England

Sounds like a lot of fun, good luck with the project.
I’m guessing one way to do it would be to associate the band with some other association(s). Street festival, something to do with food (!)
    And...

    Re: Beginner Lessons philosophy/discussion

Another one: as soon as you can (even if you don’t feel comfortable), record yourself playing just the A part to some good OldTime tune and post it to the Newbies social group....

    Re: Bela!

    Amazing! Thanks for posting this.

... but even more amazing is that there is someone here on MC who’s writing out the TAB for it!
-no, but a jazz style pdf with the chord progressions would be...

    Re: GDGD tuning

I’ve tried GDGD a few times, and the droning effect is quite impressive for awhile, and good for accompanying singing, but I found that I would begin to treat the mandolin like a guitar and not work...

    Nice!
    -Porridge!
Thanks, I find it much easier to remember the rhythm of a tune by remembering a song.

I just went walk-about on some fun facts -the Schottische (and Germany), and now I’ve discovered why I sing the way I do when I’m in the shower.

Thanks David, Mudgee Schottiche is a great tune, I like that hesitation in the rhythm too.

Welcome to MandolinCafe!! -Your first good step.

    My 2 cents:
A good instructor from the outset will get you focused on the physical.
Put some money down and get motivated and become driven.

Re: Bass Mandolin or fifths ukulele tab

Similar theme, I’ve just found out that Aquila are selling GDAe strings for ukulele -something I’m going to be playing this summer.
I really don’t want to travel with the octave, and a mask, and...

Re: Learning mandolin and music theory?

For any young people wanting to play the music they usually listen to, it’s going to be a little more problematic because of copyright.
Difficult to find notation to a lot of songs and finding TAB...

    Re: Mandola Sounds?

I don’t know if this helps, but I have an octave with a capo that often sits on the fifth fret so I guess it’s like a mandola and I’ve found that the tone is quite variable.
    It probably needs a new...

Re: Key of the song based on the melody

Another problem is they use Greek (is it?) terms.
Basically when you hear ‘Lydian’ you think, ‘centred around the fourth, the ‘key’ is... X ’. So C Lydian (beautiful) means 4 and uses the key of G...

Re: Key of the song based on the melody

If you already know the melody:
Look for any two notes that are a semitone apart, for example F#, G on the third string.
Then you immediately know that the key is either the higher of those two...

    Re: Transposing Notes

Re: Nut Size on an Octave Mandolin

I have largish hands and just played a mandolin after a long time of playing my 1 11/32 inch nut, 20 1/2 scale octave mandolin.

    Re: Another Shopgoodwill Gibson A-3

    Is Goodwill a charity?
-if Goodwill got the mandolin for free, then the buyer would just be giving a donation to charity?
    Would that be tax deductible?

Apologies if I’ve got this wrong! :)

@Prisca -Do you live near Milan? There must be some amazing music shops there. Send photos! :)
Also, I don’t think there’s VAT on second hand mandolins though I’m not sure.
