    Re: CGDA tuning on Mandolin?

There you go. Two great choices, both within your price range. The Eastman probably suits you best. It sounds great also.

    Re: CGDA tuning on Mandolin?

It seems you don't prefer the looks of a "Irish/bouzouki mandola" which I'm assuming to you means A-style oval-hole, but if I was just starting out looking to get my first mandola, I'd be all over...

    Re: CGDA tuning on Mandolin?

I would not tune a mandolin up that high.

That's why they make mandolas. There are plenty of mandolas to choose from that "look more like mandolins." Jim's suggestion just being one of many...

    Re: Wide Nut Mandolin

Being a big guy myself, I can't live without the wide nut.

It alows me to play without my figer hitting/muting adjacent strings.

Re: My take on Scarborough Fair

    Awesome!

SF is a great British folk song.

Some of the Brits are still miffed at Paul Simon stealing the song and putting himself as the author.

    Re: New F9

I had one at one time. The looks is one of the things that attracted me to it. Simple and unadorned, no frills.

Re: Arm rest. Y or N?

You might consider an alternative to the very fine McClung armrests, and you might consider Steve Smith at Cumberland Acoustic.

I like them because they are slimmer, sleeker and don't take up a...

  18. Re: Recommendations for a quality but affordable mandolin

    I also wonder.

I don't mind helping to answer the multitude of threads seeking advice on a new/my first mando. I just wish the OPs would let us know what they decided, and just not leave without a...

I like ham, so fire away.

I agree with Eric's post. The Crystal Forest is a quality mandolin at a great price. Hard to beat, IMO.
  21. Re: Talk me out of replacing an ABS nut with a bone nut

    Yes it is worth it.
Yes it should positively affect tone, maybe not playability.
Yes you need more practice. As do we all.

    Re: Strings By Mail

Strings and Beyond may not give you candy and stickers, but they will give you free shipping on orders over $35.
Gimmesomestrings is even better with free shipping on orders over $20.

  23. Re: Recommendations for a quality but affordable mandolin

Maybe a bit outside the box as far as looks go, but fits perfectly in this discussion:

  24. Re: Recommendations for a quality but affordable mandolin

From the start, since you mentioned that looks don't really play a part in your decision, the best bang for your buck (to meet your 4 criteria) would be a used A model mando. An A model is cheaper...
