Re: New mandolin for an old man

When I hear hair cutters talk about old people cancellations on a rainy day, I vow to not do that. I vow not to go home by nine o'clock either. I have friends who don't pick up anything over twenty...

    Re: Eastman MD-305

That 1k range is kind of problematic for be. The above Kentucky 900 is the only mandolin I've played in that price range I could recommend. And that becomes tantalizing close to a Silverangel,...
  3. Re: The long, arduous journey of Silverangel #438 - with a happy

Now that is a story. I won't be so upset the next time something takes a week to travel 20 miles.

I was wondering what difference an f style Ken had for sale would be from my A. I was interested...

Re: How Much Better Does It Get

Mandolins do seem like a lot of money, but think about it. What can you spend $5000 on that you will use on a daily basis? Year in, year out, rain or shine, that has the potential to forge lasting...

    Re: Any arguments AGAINST MAS?

I realized after multiple posts, I didn't answer the question.

Re: Would someone please buy this

But you see, I have to support my local brick and mortar. My strategy has been to buy fifty bucks worth of strings at a time, which is about a four to six month supply. I really can walk out with...

Don't forget the benefits of a good brain workout, and nothing stimulates more areas of the brain than playing an instrument. As we age it is important to keep mentally active.

    Re: Any arguments AGAINST MAS?

What he said +++, basicly what I didn't say correctly when I said the best musicians don't obsess. Isn't within the realm of reality.

Re: Would someone please buy this

Or I could just play the Ellis, recoil in horror at the price, and rationalize how reasonable the Collings is. I can see me now, honey, I did the responsible thing, put the Ellis I really wanted away...

    Would someone please buy this

    https://shop.gryphonstrings.com/products/2018-mandolin-collings-mandolin-mf5-55391

I'm soon to be in need of more strings, so a Gryphon visit is in order. Can't go in there with this hanging on...
  11. Re: Is Buffing Out High Gloss Finish Scuff Possible And/Or Urgent

I love to buy used but not abused old instruments. I have a Martin guitar that was a pro's gigging instrument for the first twenty years of it's life. My other old guitars are a 65 Epiphone Texan and...

    Re: Tone right

Like my audio repair tech said, if you just paid $1000 for a pair of one meter audio interconnects, they will sound good.

Seriously, someone I know and respect swears by them.

Re: How Much Better Does It Get

I would give you two paths you can take, both have their merits.

Path one: enjoy your 305. It really is a great mandolin for an afordable price. If you aren't surrounded by well stocked mandolin...
  14. Re: If you have Scroll Envy and $299.00 this has your name on it

Beware thinking a cheaper mandolin with a scroll will cure scroll envy. It is only throwing gasoline on the fire. I bought the 199.00 MK. It made me want to spend 3k immediately, and forever doubled...

    Re: Shopping! Or...Playing Around

If you can spend up to $500, get a Kentucky KM 150 or an Eastman MD 305. If you can spend up to $1000, save another $500 or buy a used Kentucky 900 or 950. If you can spend around $1500, the world...

Re: New mandolin for an old man

If you could find an old Flatiron 1N you might be a happy camper. It is a flat top and maybe the easiest mandolin to fret I've played. Great for fiddle tunes.

If you hit the reply with quote box,...

Re: Grace Design BiX Acoustic Instrument Preamp

Start looking in the Alex price range and the Tonedexter begins to look intreguing. I'm an analog kind of guy, but man, having your mandolin sound like your mandolin , that's enticing.

Re: Newbie here, suffering from analysis paralysis

One of the nicest mandolins I've ever played was a Flatiron 1N. It was just a sweet sounding mandolin, and would serve any beginner well. Like anything there will be flat tops that are uninspiring....

    Re: Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin

It would be an interesting study if you could find a hundred beginners who started on a Rogue then a hundred who started on a KM 150, then see how many were playing a year later.

    Human...

Re: Question about Acoustic Amps and PreAmps

Yes, just about every mixer has phantom power, and Hi Z switches are seen a lot too. But you are correct that the people using them don't know the how and whys of their mixers. I imaging the...

Re: Best mandolin wall stand, e.g. hook etc?

Is the String Swing hanger just a U shaped device? Here in California I need the gate across the front. Wouldn't trust anything else in a 7.1 earthquake like they had down in the desert.

Re: Best mandolin wall stand, e.g. hook etc?

I believe my hangers are Hercules, they are whatever Gryphon was using fifteen years ago. Their mounting plates are bent so as to fit into slots that run horizontally. These are made with two boards,...
