    Re: Dry Bending Sides

Hank, are you steaming the wood? I've bent hundreds of sides using moisture and heat. My questions were about bending the sides dry. Just playing with the idea. Going to try one soon I guess.

    Re: Dry Bending Sides

Thanks to you both. I'll have to experiment with dry

    Re: Dry Bending Sides

Thanks Adrian. I've bent many sides using heat and water, just never without water. I was thinking slower with a little less heat to prevent scorching.

Re: Nut Slots Cut Too Low

I generally cut the offending slot a little deeper and thin a piece of bone to fill the slot. Then reslot to proper depth. This leaves a solid piece of bone in the bottom of the slot. Probably more...

    Re: Warps in bent sides

Tony, the ripples were too spread out for one strut to straighten it all but I appreciate the suggestion. The solid cauls I made did take most of it out.
James I did heat a second time. I may...

How would I glue the struts to the warped surface? It wasn't very giving.
I haven't taken the clamps off yet. Fingers crossed.

I made two solid cauls to fit and clamped with heat blanket. Letting it cool and set over night

    Warps in bent sides

No specific mandolin content, but a building concern. I've had this happen on an earlier set of guitar sides. I heated and clamped it back in shape kinda and sanded some also.
    I was wondering if...

    Re: Colortone nitrocellulose lacquer

sliebers, Glad to know there were no hitches. What do you seal with? I've always used shellac, but not knowing where the colortone originates I bought some vinyl sealer as well. Love the burst too....

    Colortone nitrocellulose lacquer

I was wondering if anyone knew who actually makes this. It looks like the Colortone factory is in California. Could they really allow nitro to be made in Cal. I'm sure it could cause cancer lol.

    Re: lacquer problem

The check cracks in the photos posted are much larger than any I had, These were 1/8" to maybe 3/4" long. And I don't wet sand between coats if that was what was meant. I was wet sanding before...

John MacPhee, I'll try to get some pictures. Until yesterday I was trying to repair them so I'll look for more. These were not noticeable until I was wet sanding

Wrnchbndr, No odd mixes, tints or additives. Just shellac flakes melted in alcohol sealer, Behlin lacquer and a real slow evaporating lacquer thinner. Same as I've been using. The finish has cured...

    Re: illegible parlor guitar label

Heres the top. Once a ladder brace, someone tried half hearted to X brace it.
It also was originally a floating bridge with a tailpiece.

    Re: illegible parlor guitar label
