    Re: Godin question

Donít have one but a mate has and I have a Godin elsctric guitar which includes the same type of pickup. As itís in the bridge, using individual saddles, I doubt that the type of strings you use will...

    Re: James Mandolin Tailpiece

Agreed. My mandolin collection contains almost every style of tailpiece under the sun and the James beats them all hands down.

    Re: Allesi tuners

I don’t play “ugly Ameican games”, I’m not on the other side of the world from him and I patiently waited for a response to a simple email asking how much he would charge to make me a set of mandolin...

Re: Noise with cheap magnetic pickups!

Lighting circuits can play havoc with instrument pickups - listen to the change in hum level as the lighting faders go up and down - and it’s not only magnetic pickups that suffer, you can have...

    Re: James Mandolin Tailpiece

Wouldn’t it be simpler to replace it? I have both matt and polished (in gold) but the plating is wearing on the polished one and I concluded some time ago that trying to get it re-plated involved too...

    Re: Replacement for TI 154Ms

The JM-11s disappeared several years ago. I’m not aware of anything other than the TIs but a few people who used to use the JM-11s on National RM mandolins seem to be using the d’Addario “Flat Tops”.

    Re: Hi from a newbie.

Thats good to hear, it always left you thinking you were never going to get out again! Come to think of it, a mate of mine has just carved a mandolin top; he found a large sap pocket in the wood he...

    Re: Hi from a newbie.

If you’re in Stockport I assume you know about https://tonetechluthiersupplies.co.uk but I’m not sure about stuff suitable for mandolin. You could always ask or call in and struggle with the lift!...

    Re: Allesi tuners

Sorry to hear that Keith is giving up making mandolin tuners but I assume there is a limited market for them compared to guitar. I’m sure you’ll soon find a good home for the wrong’uns.

    Re: Allesi tuners

I have Alessis on my Kimble F and Waverlies on my Kimble A. I would have replaced the awful StewMac GAs on my Clark GBOM with Alessis if Mr A had bothered to reply to my email so I ended up getting...

    Re: Waverly Tuners tight

What are they like with the strings off? If they are no better after lubrication, they may be badly fitted and the posts binding.

You’re probably right; just caught a glimpse of it as I watched the programme. Scrolling through it again, although there is an arm in the way, it has the pointy end of the scratchplate alongside the...

Re: Opinion on nickel vs. gold aesthetics

Personally, I think gold looks better with the warmer look of a sunburst. If it were a black-top, I’d say nikel and if it was a natural blonde, i’d say it didn’t matter. Ultimately, it’s you who has...

Neither of mine do; perhaps some new “O” rings are called for? Anyone else with a James care to comment?

    Re: Material Below the Bridge

Elctrical grommets. You can buy them four at a time from some people or a hundred or so at a time on Amazon all the way from from China.

They perform in exactly the same way as a bootlace or a...

Re: Need info on a Barcus-Berry pickup

Try it with a high impedance preamp and it should be fine. Iíd say c.1980s but I have an even earlier one which sounds OK. Piezo technology hasnít changed that much in the last 110 years!

    They...
