Re: Eastman El Rey Video Review

The e string issue is endemic. It cannot be avoided.
Nothing will make an electric mandolin have the same output as an electric guitar. Electric mandolins have shorter scale lengths, and...

No one has brought up the Brazilian 'guitarra baiana' yet.

Re: Playing a five string vs a four

I think of a 5 string emando as a mandola with a cheater 'e' course.

Get yourself started with mandola chords/CGDA. Then start playing scales using all 5 strings. What you'll quickly sort out is...
  5. Re: A likely contentious opinion on electric mandolins

The whole idea of electrifying instruments was to amplify the acoustic sound. It follows on from other efforts: Archtops, Resonators, reverberation boxes, etc. Our own patron saint of the mandolin,...
  6. Re: A likely contentious opinion on electric mandolins

Love that Jason Anick video. I play a similar beast made by the same luthier, Paul Lestock, but I only aspire to that level of musicianship.

    Re: General Mandolin Post

If we didn't discuss the minutiae what would we say to each other? :)

Take all this advice with a grain of salt and use according to your situation.

For example, I have NEVER humidified my...
  8. Re: What is the most mandolins you've owned at one time?

I'm not sure what you're counting as a mandolin, but I currently have 8 mandolin family instruments (3 solid body electric, 2 F5s, 1 hollowbody electric, 1 mandola and 1 octave mandolin), 4 guitars...

I think you're right. They are looking for a market. It's a solution in search of a problem.

Re: I play a little guitar...

I once described my dreadnought as a "six single string course octave mandolin in an alternate tuning."
    It got a laugh.

Re: Notation for Long Black Veil

Thanks Al! I'm having flashbacks now. :)

I arranged that song a bit differently than most people do. I hit a Bm early rather than hanging on the G, and I never go to the D.

  19. Re: Question about Acoustic Amps and PreAmps

Really? Nearly every desk I have ever seen has a button for 48v phantom power. Most people never use it. So I can imagine quite a few amateur engineers wouldn't know about it.

  20. Re: Question about Acoustic Amps and PreAmps

Yep. Non-musicians listen with their eyes. But better sound will improve the overall experience, so they will like it better. They just won't be able to tell you why.

I'm interested because I am thinking about a 5 string OM (GDAEB). Though I may just give up and go back to guitar. <gasp>

Probably best to have my local luthier, Etienne Vanhove, build me an emando to spec.
