Re: Post a picture of what's on your bench?

Neck fitting on an Imperial. There is something very satisfying when the joint snugs up tight.
The mallet is there to help me "un-snug" it.

  2. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

Actually their business models are honed precisely to put food on the table, the fact that they are based upon Gibson designs from the 1920's is besides the point. Building instruments that are...

    Re: Date for Rigel Mandiolin?

    Scott,
The information came directly from Pete Langdell. As I remember there were a lot of Rigel dating questions at that time so this was a way to head them off.

My Rigel is #1266, made in the...

Re: break angle and string tension

    Marty,
Vega archtop guitars of the 30's & 40's came with the "Adjustone" tailpieces that functioned in the same way. Definitely related to their banjo tailpieces.

    Re: What's a Jazz mandolin?

I think you might have that backwards, the original name of the company was the "Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Manufacturing Company"
The L-5 was a very large mandolin.

Re: Post a picture of what's on your bench?

Not all failures are tragic, some can be amusing- I drew a set of body mold templates that I sent to a friend with a laser cutter to cut out of 1/4" plexi. The file scale wasn't set correctly so in...
  9. Re: interesting design: Yellowstone cutaway oval hole

    Don,
None taken. I consider anyone who plays the mandolin to be a friend.:mandosmiley:
Actually, I was a little surprised that Weber went this route, guitar shaped mandolins are a very small niche...
  10. Re: interesting design: Yellowstone cutaway oval hole

While you are at it, do you want me to get off your lawn too? :(
  11. Re: Mandolone, Regal Prince Tenor, MB-Jr, Lange Jo-Mando, Sov Jo-

    Jake,
That Prince tenor is insane! How does it sound?
I can't see how four thin strings would move that 18" wide soundboard in any meaningful way. However, looking at the wear pattern, somebody...

Re: What is the function of the body?

I agree with fscotte, ultimately, the question has too many variables, both human and material: each person is different as is each tree. Eventually you might be able to solve the material side of...

    Martin,
That was good fun. Hopefully next year they will give you a bigger room.

    Bill,

Outside of all that acoustics stuff, the body simply provides nifty places to attach your strap.

Re: Show us your jig? Bindings

My archtop jig works similar to Jims- except in my case the rims ride on a wood collar or donut around the cutter bit that matches the arch height. There are three points of support- two at the rim...

    Re: David bowie RIP

One of my heroes. (no pun intended)
Ziggy Stardust got me interested in the guitar and started me on my musical journey.

    Re: Macafferri shaped mandolins

    Rick,
Thanks! I'm glad I could help. The Selmer-styles definitely have their own "sound", but I try to avoid the "ice picks" side of the spectrum.:) I do find myself bouncing back and forth between...

    Re: Macafferri shaped mandolins

I guess the question is whether you are just interested in the look or do you want the sound too?
I want both. It was the sound of the Selmers that first attracted me; somewhere "in-between" an...

Re: Del Vecchio In The House....

    Very cool!
If it is anything like their guitars, it should be very lightly built with only minimal (if any) bracing. If you ever open it up, I would love to see what is inside.

    Re: Snakehead H-2 mandola?

    Wow, harsh crowd.
Frankly, given Gibson's history of mixing and matching from the "parts bin" in the 20's and 30's, I would have been surprised if there weren't a snakehead mandola. All we need now...

Re: The Mandolin - a history on Kickstarter

Excellent! I have been waiting for this book to come out and I cannot wait to read it.
Thanks to Graham for the hard work and the mandolin community for stepping up.

    Re: top plate bracing

If I am not mistaken, the Gibson Army-Navy style mandolins used a brace directly under the bridge. (or at least the one I looked at did) Some of those sound pretty good.

    Re: top plate bracing

Is the top canted like a Martin or is it flat? The cant is vital to the Martin design, without it the top has no chance to avoid deformation between the brace below the soundhole and the brace above...
