  1. Re: Rough and ready ... quick and dirty, electric conversion.

I have two hanging in my shop right now and three more in process. Must not be looking hard enough. :)

I'm going to be working with Pete at Almuse on a set of pickups for it.

    Re: New Tenor guitar

Interesting idea. I think I'll mock that up in CAD and see how that looks. Thanks

    Re: New Tenor guitar

Scale length is 23". This is just a prototype that I'm trying to figure out some design and construction processes, so nothing is set in stone.

    New Tenor guitar

Looking for some feedback from the tenor guitar community. I have been building/experimenting with a variety of scales and styles of tenor guitars. I am currently working on an LP style and the...

    Re: What's up with USPS?

Guessing that Dorian may have had something to do with it. Non-priority mail being diverted. USPS has a section on their website for service alerts related to weather and other disasters. I do...

Re: V-shaping a C or round shaped neck

I draw a line with a pencil off center on either side and use that as a no go line and only cross it when I'm ready to do the finish sanding.

Re: 8 string solid body playability

Buy a solid body with no electronics. That will save you some money. Hmmmm. I wonder if there is a market for such a beast?

Thanks. I think I've only built three or four.

  11. Re: Two point semi/hollow electric mando w/ magnetic pickup

I am just wrapping up a five string and just started on a eight string. I know that Belvoir Guitars has been building one but don't know if its spoken for or not. Its an archtop. He does good work...

Re: 8 string solid body playability

In my opinion, paired string instruments with magnetic pickups are problematic on many levels. The instruments on the lower end of the market suffer from a lot of things like inferior electronics,...
  13. Re: Heads up! Nitrocellulose products dwindling

I see absolutely no evidence that nitro production is winding down. Yes, there are some consolidations but that is expected in any industry. Stewmac simply decided to carry their own line of...
  14. Re: musical instruments exempt from cites rosewood

The description reads "The conference amended an earlier Appendix II listing of rosewoods and related tree species to ensure that small finished items, including musical instruments, parts and...
  15. Re: Need suggestion on removing bad finish from a build.

What reason did someone say it wont dry? Did you have a two part lacquer that you didn't catalyze?
  16. Re: musical instruments exempt from cites rosewood

I thought it also included ebony and some mahoganies.
  17. Re: Need suggestion on removing bad finish from a build.

I've stripped back with lacquer thinner before. You can scrape the bindings first then brush shellac on them then strip with lacquer thinner. The thinner won effect the shellac. Once most of it is...

    Re: White Stained Mandolins?

I used to do pickled maple in the furniture business. We used a stain from Sherwin Williams which slightly turned the wood white. We would then spray a coat of tinted lacquer, using the stain, to...
  19. Re: UK Luthier to build 4 String Solid Body Electric Mandolin

That's your problem. Don't use the Cafe PM to communicate. Email him through his website. I'll send him a note too.
  20. Re: UK Luthier to build 4 String Solid Body Electric Mandolin

Odd. I'd send a note to Pete at Almuse too. They have a joint venture.
  21. Re: UK Luthier to build 4 String Solid Body Electric Mandolin

Check out Belvoir Guitars. He is currently building a mandolin.
  22. Re: UK Luthier to build 4 String Solid Body Electric Mandolin

That's why I bought a CNC too. I've seen a couple luthiers slow down, and simply retire, because of hand problems. Trying to work smarter now. Looking forward to seeing what you two put together.
  23. Re: UK Luthier to build 4 String Solid Body Electric Mandolin

I think that you could ask a guitar builder in the UK to build one that is familiar with the design of instrument that you are interested in. You'd just need to provide an awful lot of information...

    Re: Stewmac Upgrade kits

I have people regularly spending $150+ on upgrades, pickup, bridge and pots, for import electrics and they are getting their money out of them when reselling them. The few import acoustics I have...
