Re: Need help identifying old mandolin

You can compare the shape. The one on eBay appears to have a better quality wood and what looks like real binding around the top. It's got the same painted fretboard. The one on eBay also doesn't...

Re: Need help identifying old mandolin

I think this might be in the era of Oscar Schmidt moving to United.

    Re: Unlabelled Harmony - Sears?

Exactly. Here a 17 year old guy from Oregon named Mike stands in front of his senior assembly at James Madison High School and plays a Donovan song on a Yamaha 12-string. :)

He's probably close to or exceeded the value of the instrument in a resale situation.

Re: Need help identifying old mandolin

Keep checking back, more people will make comments and may be able to further Identify the label. Chances are that the label won't ID the maker, it will ID a distributor that bought it for resale.

Re: Need help identifying old mandolin

The headstock looks a bit like the Oscar Schmidt built mandolins, or it might be Regal built. Does anybody recognize what's left of the label?

It's not an expensive instrument, the fretboard was...

Re: Need help identifying old mandolin

I can't get the image files to open. When I try to download the image they are trying to zip. From the thumbnails it looks like a fairly common instrument. If somebody can get the image files down...

    Re: Shop questions

My friend Paul Unkert has a shop that he has been running out of his garages (double) for a few years. It's always a shock to walk though the house and see full size basses everywhere because he...

Re: “The gibson” stencil or decal

eBay isn't the only source in the world for "The Gibson" inlay and decals. With that said I agree that this one didn't have one to begin with.
  11. Re: Seeking "mournful" mandolin - like Levon Helm with The Band

I'm pretty sure Robbie was playing it on a different guitar in the OP's clip but listen close at the break in this version. It's there just not as pronounced.

    Re: Unlabelled Harmony - Sears?

I don't think much changed in the Harmony manufacturing world until the very late 60's into the 70's. Prior to that the finishes seemed pretty constant. I bought my first imported guitars in 1968-69....

    Re: Shop questions

The only reason I would ever consider a shop too big would be if I was constantly heating it or cooling it. I dislike the size of mine, I'd like more room. Everything I have with one or two...

    Re: Unlabelled Harmony - Sears?

Late would be just prior to 1975. I used to buy new when I was young. They didn't start labeling that way until just before the end.

Re: What's up with that truss rod?

I'm going to guess they just put the veneer on without cutting out the hole for the pocket? That's crazy. Did that one have a Floyd Loar label? :)

Re: Seeking tailpiece for old bowl back

There were at least three different designs used on these over the years (probably more) but they are all the same basic screw pattern. The tops were not totally interchangeable either but they are...

    Re: Unlabelled Harmony - Sears?

It's a very late Harmony built mandolin that was made for the trade with no label. I'm not sure where the Sears connection comes in. For their history Harmony built unlabeled instruments. It's not...

Re: What's up with that truss rod?

If in fact there is a way to adjust through the end pin hole it raises another question. Why is there a truss rod cover at all? I think what you're looking at is a manufacturing error.

Re: What's up with that truss rod?

I'm not sure you could make that nut accessible even if you start hogging out the wood around it.

Re: What's up with that truss rod?

The OP can give up on the Allen wrenches, that's a hex nut. You just have to blow the picture up a bit. Look inside the body with a mirror. Is there a Allen screw on the inside of the neck block that...

Re: Seeking tailpiece for old bowl back

Karen that appears to be the base of a Waverly Cloud type tailpiece. The good news is that people sell the base often on eBay. The bad news is there aren't any up there right now. Just two that have...
  23. Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

I've always felt that the day that the builders of the AntonioTsai and BruceWeiarts mandolins figure out how to get the shape and dimensions right and figure out the things can be sold without the...

It never occurred to me to buy some of them and hold onto them until the price went up :)
