  1. Re: Unusual angular shaped mandolin with double oval soundholes

Aside from the holes which may be appealing, there could be issues. I looked through all the photos, but remain none the wiser. The only photo of the whole top has those strange multiple shiny...

Re: Pick thickness - how to choose?

I'd suggest thin and flexible for Celtic and tremolo. This isn't a 'one size fits all' thing. Ballet, tap and clog all use foorwear appropriate for their dancing style. But you wouldn't do ballet...

    Re: Pick Thickness

For me, Dunlop 0.60mm is about as thin as I go - though recently I bought an electronic tuner, and thrown in the box as a freebie were some very thin plectrums. They sound pretty good. I've also...

Re: What is a "Selected Spruce Top"?

I'd think a look at the cut edges of the f-holes would be a good indication of solid wood or otherwise. Though you can't usually look that closely until you have the instrument in your hands.

Re: Bridge digging into picking hand

I had an old mandolin that I'd been playing for fifteen or twenty years. During that time, the act of playing the instrument had naturally rounded off the corners of the bridge on the upper side -...

Re: Tuning issues - Octave Mandolin

Sounds like the slots in the nut are not cut deep enough. Result is strings very high above the fretboard, the effect is that pressing the string on the first few frets nearest the nut will increase...
  9. Re: What are, celtic-, bluegrass-, classical etc. mandolins?

Directionality is a significant factor. What the audience (or other players) out front are hearing may not be the same as what the person playing hears. When playing in a jam with other mucicians,...

In the UK it is still available for free download or streaming on BBC iplayer, though I don't know for how long it will remain.

  11. Re: Where to hold right wrist/arm when playing tremolo?

The shape of the mandolin plays an important part. A flat-top instrument may use a different approach to an arch-top. DIstances and heights and angles vary between instruments. As for irritation from...

Re: Identification of two mandolins (no markings)

The segmented f-holes look a bit odd for a supposed Stradolin. Usually the holes have either circular or comma-shape, with a more extreme point. The ones in the photo look more rounded.

Re: Open right hand to closed fist transition help

It may depend on what sort of music and style of playing is the goal. I use different grips during the course of playing, depending on the approach to both the music and the physical mandolin. It...

Re: A-strings constantly going out of tune

Depends. In my case it mostly happens with instruments which are otherwisec well-behaved, but need extra care when they've not been picked up and played for a while.

Re: A-strings constantly going out of tune

Yes. I find I especially have to do this with the E strings, though it applies to all. When I've left the instrument overnight or longer, the strings tend to grip the nut slots more stubbornly. I...

Re: Eastman 305 strap button--friction fitted?

Well, a traditional mandolin didn't have such an endpin, nor a strap button. Both are recent additions. Many mandolins have neither. Whether inspired by a guitar or a violin may be determined on a...

Re: Is this how it starts?

I like my Stradolin very much, but after years of playing flat-tops this arch-top design is a bit awkward for me, in terms of right-hand stability. I can see why people fit arm-rest attachments, the...
