  1. Re: D'Addario Micro Headstock vs Micro Clip Free tuners

I started playing BEFORE electronic tuners were affordable and common!! Believe me , if you cared about being in tune with those you are playing with you would cover 3/4 of the mandolin rather than...
  2. Re: What are the chances that a moderately-priced mandolin sounds

Several years ago I was in a music store, picked up a “cheap” mandolin. Price was $99 case extra, it flat blew me away!! I figured if I bought another mandolin I would have to find another wife , so...

Re: Using a capo with a mandolin?

A mandolin’s tone changes so dramatically with a capo, I guess because of high pitch, short scale. That is why I oppose them.
  6. Re: Convince me of the value of strict DUDU picking?

How about Jesse McRenyolds cross picking, he has a real hitch in his. I cross pick more like a backward Shuffler which also means like a banjo roll you use different rolls a lot of times for one...

Re: Help Dating a Gibson F12

    Re: Un-learning - what an ordeal !.

If the timing is right, the basic melody is right , what is one passing note. Maybe Monroe was wrong! Really playing your way
  11. Re: Pick selection time: And the survey says……

I disagree , if you playMandolin you need those chop chords, real chords and he is doing great on them. Bluegrass uses them on any speed not just fast and traditionally tone not just a slap like so...

    Re: musical notation question

This is bluegrass! I’ve heard one of Don Reno’s boys say they can’t recall their dad playing s break twice the same way. This could even be a transcript and she might be playing it different on what...

The hat doesn’t matter, one break and everyone will know how good you are regardless of what hat you have on
  14. Re: Microphone recommends for home studio recording?

I guess it becomes a matter of taste, I thought the condensers all sounded harsh, love the ribbon on any acoustic instrument I have no idea on price of this ribbon but the others would greatly...

I’m going to recommend something that s lot of folks will flat think I’m crazy. For acoustic instrument with possible exception of fiddle I think a Nady ribbon mock is hard to beat unless you pay...

Re: Why is bluegrass played so fast?

Because of this “drive” even slow songs sound almost fast! Listen to Flatt & Scruggs, and early Country Gentlemen, master of this drive, when they play l slower songs. It punches right thru you
  20. Re: The Change That I See in Bluegrass Over The Past 20 Years.
