I would love to know more about the recording and arranging process around “Crescent Moon,” was there any discussion about that tune? It might be my favorite track right now.

    New Heiden Octave Short Scale

This showed up today. Waited two years and hoo boy is it great. Michael has built four instruments for me over the past 30 years. This thing plays and sounds as good as it looks.

If anyone is interested, I transcribed that video for my own practice (and in preparation for the Heiden Octave I should be getting any day now).

Re: In Praise of Michael Heiden

I love my F5 but I miss my old A-009. I wonder if anyone on the cafe bought it from Dusty Strings and if they like it and play it? I had to sell it to pay for my F5 (which is the joy of the world)...

    Re: Heiden string choices

I use the D’Addario Chris Thile set and my Heiden likes the sturdier A string and E string, but I also used the Simonoff sets for a while and they were good too. I’ll try those GHS sets.

I'm keen to take a lesson or two or at least have a chat with anybody in my metro area that plays classical instruments.

Has anyone played a Hopf Model 34?

  23. Re: Fourth Finger or not to Fourth Finger, that is the question

  24. Re: Fourth Finger or not to Fourth Finger, that is the question

Thanks! He says live on stage he goes for power, which is the third finger, but he "should" use the pinky. This is the crux of it, I think. Should he really?
  25. Re: Fourth Finger or not to Fourth Finger, that is the question

I agree with you both, as I started with fiddle and moved to the mandolin in my late teens. That said, it does take more force to fret a pinky on a mandolin, and I wondered if, as upright players...
