    Re: Soft Picks ?

Okay, the Radex 1.25 picks arrived several days ago. I like like them more than the 1.0 thickness that I described above, because the thicker picks are stiffer. I don't like the slight flex of the...

Re: Am I asking too much?

Local school system might be of help (or not)
The "Junior Appalachian Musicians" program is active in several east coast states (at least NC & VA) and often can make use of instruments for the use...
  7. Re: Looking to start a mandolin centric jam in the Chapel Hill ar

Well, a week has gone by with no responses.
I suspect that most people think that an all mandolin jam would be only slightly better than an all banjo jam or an all bass jam.:whistling:
  8. Re: Traditional or modern design, what's your strategy ?

I'm glad to have helped Jean. Every time I am in Union Grove I think of you pleasantly.
Would love for you to visit here again someday.

    Re: Soft Picks ?

Because of this (and another) thread, I ordered some Radex 1.0 mm picks. I expected them to be about like all the rest that I try and discard (I'm very curious and waste money), but I was surprised...

    Re: MD315 speedneck

A less frequently discussed method of finishing the speed neck is to stain the neck slightly (I've used diluted brown leather stain-alcohol base) followed by sealing by using 5-minute clear epoxy. ...

    Re: Truss rod soda straw?

After the long thread several weeks ago about truss rods, I was convinced that the rods work as a giant longitudinal CLAMP, which squeezes the back half of the neck wood when the nut is tightened. ...

    Re: Truss rod soda straw?

Was the rod not fixed to the wood somehow at the heel end? (fixed nut, bend, or something)

    John,
So you just can't tighten the nut any more at some early point before anything is accomplished?

    Re: Truss rod soda straw?

What do you imagine would happen if the truss rod got glue on it??
Has there actually been a problem occur that was attributed to a glued truss rod?

Re: TC Electronic Polytune Clip-on Tuner

No. Works for guitar, not so much for mandolin.
Nevertheless, I use this tuner on strobe every day.

Edit: Adding: I agree with Paul, who was typing while I was typing.:))

    Re: Soft Picks ?

I've always felt that the Dunlop Totex picks feel softer to me. Various thicknesses. I haven't used them for mandolin. YMMV
  21. Re: how to get perfect compensation, tool perhaps?

I had a similar problem years ago when I was using a wound 2nd. My luthier just grafted on a piece of ebony onto the front of my saddle at the A string position and fine tuned it from there. It was...
