Re: Can I switch to mandolin

Try it! It's a fun and extremely addictive little instrument!

However, remember that the Mandolin is a fretted fiddle, not a tiny guitar.

    Re: Armrest keeps falling off

The carpenter jack attached to LR Baggs radius kept slipping off at a gig. I'd have to "pop" it back on in between every song! So during a break in our set I took the small strip of leather laced...

    Re: Darkest pick

Pick angle can help as well. John Reischman demonstrates it here (4:30).

    Re: Collings

I played a gentleman's MT at a jam not too long ago. It sounded and played excellent! It stacked up well against my Weber and actually I think it sounded "sweeter".

    Re: F style mandolin strap

Ah, that makes sense. Sorry. The Lakota straps are thinner at the loop (a nice nice strap too) and might work for your thin-scrolled mandolin... they are a bit pricey though.

Just pull it through the scroll and loop it though itself. You may, as already mentioned, be overthinking this.

    I hope this photo helps.

    Re: Mandolin Advice

Right on! Flat tops are my favorite! Mine gets more play time than any other instrument I own.

    Congrats and happy picking!

Re: Feel like Steve Martin in the "Jerk"

Not sure if this has already been brought up but... it helps to listen (watch on YouTube) to a bunch of BG music. Feel the rhythm- get the sound deep in your soul.

Re: How To Avoid Losing An Expensive Pick

    Consistency is the key indeed!

    Here's my version...

The good picks (my favorites) go in an old Altoids tin and left on top of my book case.

The rest go in an old coffee cup that rests on...

Re: Would it be a dumb move?

MAS + Scroll envy creates a powerful desire! Dont let it take you for this silly trade. Those KM505s are nice and as you said, you're fond if it as well.

Keep it and save for an actual upgrade!

    Re: mandolins on television

"To make the castle for our dreams.... all you need!"

Father of two girls. This show and others are all the rage in our house. That's a fun one to play too. The kidos get a kick out of it.
