    Re: Gold tone

I'm happy with my Gold Tone OM, haven't played one of their mandolins though.
  3. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

Gibson owns Kramer and Kramer makes Stratocaster copies under the Kramer Focus model (except for slightly different headstock). They're guilty of the same thing they're accusing other companies of.

Re: Am I asking too much?

You could try selling it to Guitar Center if you have one nearby, they tend to take mostly everything even if you don't get the most money you could for it. Otherwise I'd probably just hang on to it...

Re: Spruce top v's Ceder top?

Which classical guitar are you buying? I'm a classical guitarist primarily these days, so I'm curious.

    Re: Piccolo mandolins

I've often wondered what the smallest fully functional, non-novelty stringed instrument is (based on scale length I suppose); seems like a piccolo mandolin might be a strong candidate. There are some...

    Re: Kentucky KM180S

The S in 180S should stand for solid top, and that's the most important thing as long as the price is reasonable.

    Re: Chance Stradolin Purchase

Good for you for revitalizing a nice old instrument as well.

Sounds interesting, looking forward to seeing pictures.
  13. Re: So what would a 27" scale mandocello sound like?

27" is a good baritone guitar scale length, so I'd imagine not unsuitable for mandocello.

    Re: Used beginner mandos

I lucked out on getting a used KM-156 on ebay for $225, it was in mint condition and the buyer had bought it new nicely set up from Folkmusician. It just takes a bit of patience to wait for a deal...
  16. Re: Man crosses the Atlantic in a barrel - with mando

Re: 19" octave mandolin - tune as CGDA

You can use pliers to crush the ball ends and convert them into loop ends as long as you do it carefully, opens up a lot of options since you can then use electric guitar strings.

    Edit - just saw...

    Re: Mandolin or Keyboard?

I feel like a keyboard is a handy thing to have around even if it doesn't end up being a primary instrument. Friends visiting may play it, and also a lot keyboards have accompaniment tracks that you...

Sadly true, especially for ones that aren't either very expensive or extremely cheap. All of my mandolins have been bought online. I went to Memorial Music recently though and they have an...

Re: Schecter electric bass guitar: opinion wanted

I have a 6 string and a 5 string bass, I typically keep the lowest string tuned to A on them though. I think it makes incorporating it into songs a lot easier when you can just mimic whatever you...

    Re: Kentucky KM-150 vs KM-156

The only difference is the finish color, I have the 156 (brown) which I think looks better per my personal taste, but others may prefer the 150 (sunburst). Try to find regular photos of each model in...

Re: Who makes a good inexpensive Octave Mandolin?

My Hora OM had the truss rod access in the soundhole rather than the headstock, did you check there or maybe they did make them without truss rods at some point. I didn't have top sinkage problems...

    Re: Bouzouki help

Are you tuning it in the Greek style of CFAD or in Irish bouzouki GDAD tuning? CFAD tuning is the same as the four highest pitched strings on a guitar except a whole step down, so you might rather...
