    Re: Attic Find

Looks to me like the string tension broke the top and the neck and block pushed forward. It was most likely sent to the attic because of this, unless it was strung up and sent to the attic and broke...

Re: How thick of a pick?

I think a thicker pick can be driven harder into the strings, but then I also think it needs to be driven harder. dorenac I think that is what makes you tired playing a thicker pick. For me I don't...

Re: Thank you Scott and Dan!

Agree with the above, Many thanks. Murphys law I guess. Now that it's back in the original version I think I like it better. What did they say about an old dog and new tricks.
  4. Re: Grover? Gotoh? Schaller? Golden Age Mandolin Tuners?

You may have to also shorten the screw so it doesn't bottom out. Or not.
  5. Re: Replacing Tuning machines with non-standard distance between

Posted this before the change, but it was lost. Anyway old Gibson's suffer from this same spacing of the tuners. Before the new ones came out with the old spacing I bought whatever tuner I wanted,...

    Re: Bad tuner?

I have had strings that the winding on the loop slips and it goes flat until it can't slip any more. This is rare, but I have had it happen a couple times.

Re: What strings are you currently playing?

GHS pure nickel 11-41 on one and 11-39 on another. I love what they do to the sound of my mandolins, and how long they last with the same sound.

Re: Help with Big Muddy Action/Bridge height

If you have light strings on the action needs to be higher than with heavier strings. Not sure about these, but I would think a lighter string set. 1/16 at the G is about where you should be for a...

Re: Best Bridge Jig Stew Mac or Cuberland ??

I have the Stu Mac jig, I never use it. I go across like Marty says. Bought the jig 10 years ago, used it once, never looked back.

    Re: Kudos to Fire-Eye

Daren at RedEye has always been great to talk to and a very nice guy. I wanted to make a change to mine and called to make sure it was alright, not a problem he was very helpful.

    Re: electric hum

I plugging in and out with a cleaner doesn't cure it, I wouldn't use an abrasive. Doing so will make it happen more frequently. I would replace it.

    Re: Buzzing at/near the bridge

Check your string height and see if it lowered because of drying out from heat. A buzz is hard to find as it can travel the string and sound like it is somewhere else. Also look and see if you have...

Re: Kinda non-mando: volume pot taper issues

It sounds to me like you have a linear pot and NOT an audio taper pot. The issue you describe is typical of a linear pot.

You have a linear pot, you need an audio pot. Simple fix, correct pot.

Re: How thick of a pick?

It depends on how your mandolin sounds. A brighter mandolin will benefit from a thicker pick, a very warm mandolin may not. I use Wegen TF100 at 1mm, I like them thinned down better for my mandolin....

Re: 1920's Gibson Tenor Banjo info

I have had a couple of trapdoor banjos, both have been secured with 3 screws. I have one now and it has the three screws. I would find it hard to believe one screw would hold it on.

Re: 1920's Gibson Tenor Banjo info

The trapdoor is mounted with only three holes, and had a ball bearing tone ring. The three holes are all on one side of the lower part of the pot. If the four holes are spaced around evenly it may...

Lane, when you install the James tailpiece you can simply cut the wires to the endpin and put the new tailpiece on without taking the pickup out. It will have plenty of length to be soldered later if...

Re: Help with EQ'ing K&K mandolin pickup

Are you plugging into the Baggs Para first? I use a RedEye and it sounds great. Another thing the K&K preamp input is 1M just like the pickup. The RedEye is also 1M. The Baggs if I remember is 10M...

There are a lot of colored perfelings that are 100 years old and still look good. I think steam dying helps.

    Re: Recommendation for an electric?

If that isn't enough they make rubber and felt picks for bass players that won't give you much volume. The felt may glide better on the strings than the rubber, but both for quiet practicing will...
