    Re: electric hum

Good idea. It won’t do any harm even if that’s not the problem and one can should last most people a lifetime. I bought a can of Sevisol over 30 years ago - if only I could remember where I put it...
  2. Re: If you think changing strings on a mandolin is a pain...

Do harpists regularly change their strings? At $500 or so for a full set of 47, I doubt if it happens that often.

    Re: electric hum

Likely to be socket corrosion - either in the guitar or the amp. Plug something in once and the corrosion gives you a bad earth, which causes hum and a decreased signal. The corrosion will likely...

Unfortunately, I’m on the opposite side of the Peak District otherwise I’d have called in and given it the once over for you.

    Re: Help with identifying mandolin

Looks like Oxfam does have a presence in the US. I said what I did because the relative scarcity of instruments in the UK tend to mean higer prices that the US. Also, Oxfam operate a series of what...

Re: Strap for Kimble 2 Point

Neither of my Kimbles have “authorised” straps, I got the nice people at Pinegrove to make them (NFI). The fact that Will’s non-scroll mandolins come with a strap button, in my mind, settles the...

    Re: Help with identifying mandolin

Not quite sure where the o/p is located Mike. Given the name they’re posting under, I suspect the UK - not sure if you have Oxfam shops in the US? There may well be a difference in value between the...

Re: Calton Cases - in pictures

The guitar case is from 1976 and the mandolin one several years later. I swapped the mandolin case (when it was new) for an Ibanez plywood case (not so new). Straight swap, great deal! It’s black and...

Re: Calton Cases - in pictures

Those are all new ones! The original ones didn’t have the rectangular nameplate. I’ve both mandolin and guitar cases “before the plate”.

Hi Varanus, welcome to the cafe. Don’t know the Hathaway and can’t recommend particular gauges but you should know that Newtone will put together sets of whatever gauge strings you want. Might help...

Re: Best Celtic Mandolin around ~500($700)?

I think their passing seems to have been missed by many people. It’s not that “I don’t get up the west end”, I live nearly 300 miles away and I’ve not been to the Republic of London for at least 10...

Aidan - I think you’ll find that Ivor Mairants closed the shop at the end of 2019 although they may still have an on- line presence.

Re: Best Celtic Mandolin around ~500($700)?

Personally, I’d go for spruce but I’d stress that that’s purely a personal opinion. Apart from sound, which you seem to know about, the thing I’ve found with cedar, particularly guitars and 40+ years...

Didn’t know Ken was into building mandolin family instruments. Although I’ve not seen him recently, we go back nearly 50 years. I developed my first black & white film in his bathroom and bought a...

In the long term the Gibson is likely to hold it’s value whereas the value of the others is likely to decrease. Whether $1000 is a good price for any particular Gibson will depend on its condition...

Re: Did Bill Collings Sign All Or Some?

My ‘91 Santa Cruz “Tony Rice” has Tony’s signature on the label. I have it on good authority that he personally scalloped the braces and buffed up the nitro finish before it left the factory!

    Re: Holoubek tailpiece ??

No, I don’t think that’s original. Ondrej put a standard stamped tailpiece on mine (2002) which is engraved “Holoubek”. Best of luck finding a means of contacting him, he seems to have made an art...
