Re: The end of my playing days.

I don't know if THIS story from the UK has been posted already - forgive me if it has. A touching gesture directed toward the memory of a musical friend.

Re: Sarah Jarosz playing a Nugget Mandolin

Listened again with headphones. A couple notes - Sarah has the Nugget plugged in - while Thile is using that clip-on mic he favors. And Mike Elizondo's bass work is sweet. He's also music director of...

Re: Sarah Jarosz playing a Nugget Mandolin

That's a great performance of the Book of Right On. I remember how Joanna Newsom's harp based music killed me when I first heard it. I should revisit her work.

Sarah had just acquired her Nugget...

"Some might question the wisdom of basing an entire business around a single instrument such as a mandolin, but for Vance, the decision was easy."

One might say the same for the author, just...

    Re: Sennheiser ME64 + K6 powering module

The older (very similar) Sennheiser modular system in the 1990s was built around the K3U power supply - which takes a 6v camera battery but also can run off phantom power. I have some older ones that...
  6. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

I think it's fair to say that KB and Co. value 'story line' over comprehensiveness. They are trying very hard to prune the complexities of the world into a comprehensible story. Not the ONLY story....
  7. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

Sharon Gilchrist - but as luck would have it, hers has a torch inlay and no name on the headstock!
  8. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

And since she's playing a Taylor guitar, she didn't need to spend a dime to have her name inlayed into the fingerboard and headstock unlike Jimmie Rodgers! ;-)
  9. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

My impression is that there are at least two types of patrons in the museum world. The philanthropist who can pay market rate for the items that museums want to have, and donate them. And the...
  10. Re: The Guitars (and Mandolins) of Ken Burns' Country Music

Ha! Here we go. Number four. At the opening of tonight's show. Marty Stuart speaking of Marty Robbins.

  11. Re: The Guitars (and Mandolins) of Ken Burns' Country Music

I thought Eddie Arnold was #4, but when I look again, I think he's playing a 00 12-fret. Two more episodes to go though... ;-)
  12. Re: The Guitars (and Mandolins) of Ken Burns' Country Music

Also a surprising number of the tiny Martin 5-18 guitar. I expected to see exactly ONE, but there's been four performers seen with them so far, I think.

Re: Is my top caving in?

It looks as if one of the posts that hold the saddle is bent or tilted in the base??
  14. Re: The Guitars (and Mandolins) of Ken Burns' Country Music

Thanks for the info, Tom. I'll add it to the photo's caption on FB. The way the internet works, photos move around much faster than accurate information that needs to stay with them!
  15. Re: The Guitars (and Mandolins) of Ken Burns' Country Music

So many Fender acoustics! I suspect they had a look and comfort level, and maybe did not put out too much sound which could be an advantage when an off-camera band is providing most of the music?
  16. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

Personally, I think that the pacing, the writing, the narration, are all part of the Florentine Films style (Burns' production company) - he's going to stick with it whether you like it or not. So we...
  17. Re: The Guitars (and Mandolins) of Ken Burns' Country Music

I did think that was Red on the right holding the Martin. Am I wrong? (both mandolins are on straps, although I don't know the significance of that!)

    Re: Charlie Monroe's Mandolin players

Revisiting this thread, I find that the album Dr. Strickland refers to in post #5 above, is now on YT. I'm listening for the Lester Flatt mandolin sound!

  19. Re: The Guitars (and Mandolins) of Ken Burns' Country Music

I think that the mandolin players are Orne Osborne (l) and Red Rector (r). Searching for the answer I found a thread here at the Cafe from 8 years ago where I provided the answer to my own question!...
  20. The Guitars (and Mandolins) of Ken Burns' Country Music

Are you watching the PBS doc, Country Music? Come join a FB group dedicated to identifying the instruments shown (not just guitars, there are some interesting mandolins too). Lend a hand with ID,...

Sticky: Re: Loar Picture of the Day

Oh come on... you weren't really seriously thinking of having a luthier try and remove a layer of the finish on your very fine looking mandolin, were you? This is just the mental wanderings caused by...

It's true that the tone guard is not discussed as much in recent years here at the Cafe. I've thought that it's become pretty widely accepted as 'NOT a gimmick' but something exactly analogous to a...

    Re: Ricky Skaggs on NPR

I don't think that Marty plays a Loar. But someone else may be able to tell the story of his much-autographed mandolin!

This may be a slightly better image of Ricky's Big Mon replica. (perhaps...

Yes! That was one of a couple delightful moments on the PBS kickoff concert for the upcoming Ken Burns documentary season. A reproduction of Mon's mandolin for sure. Also, Marty Stuart took on a...
