    Re: RIP Tony Rice

    Very sad. Rest well.
  2. Re: Some Thoughts on Vintage Gibson and Martin Oval Holes

Great post. You pretty much nailed what I hear and feel from my 1918 Vega in your detailed description of the Martin.
  3. Re: Hypothetically, which would you consider the best deal?

    Okay. Thanks!
  4. Hypothetically, which would you consider the best deal?

I'm not really interested in either piece. Just trying to educate myself. Lots of variables granted. Just from the information given, which one of the two is the better deal? Or is it too close to...

    Re: Girouard Ensemble A-5 opinions.

Thank you. Your statement was not rude or offensive at all. I'll take blunt. I'm blunt to a fault. I've been buying, selling and playing stringed instruments for years. Just fairly new to Mandolin....

    Re: Girouard Ensemble A-5 opinions.

Maybe a ridiculous question but is it common for higher end pieces to have varnish drips or splatter visible through the F holes? Obviously not impacting the tone or structure but I did notice drip...

Thanks all for the replies. Yes Marcus CA the one I'm looking into is the one at Sylvan. I'm a few hrs north. A bit closer to Gryphon where the have a slightly used Pava A Player.

Can anyone comment on Dwaileebe Mandolins?

I'm looking at one of Marc Dwaileebe F5 models. My first foray into F styles. As much as I would like a Collings or Weber my budget is limited. He has a new within my budget at $2300. No tax and just...

Re: Late 70s Epiphone MM-70 or new Eastman MD315?

FWIW. As to the origin of the Epi MM-70, one of the pics from the CL ad shows the blue Epiphone Kalamazoo Michigan/Made in Japan label in the F-hole. I know as far as Epi guitars go, '69 was the last...

Wholeheartedly agree Allen. All for supporting the small brick and mortar shops that struggle to stay in existence. It has already paid dividends with this particular shop. Emergency pre-gig/session...

Re: Late 70s Epiphone MM-70 or new Eastman MD315?

Having not played many F style mandolins the MD315 felt very good in my hands. Had enough punch and sweetness if you will. Yes Multidon the epi was way blinged out. Not important to me at all. I...

Late 70s Epiphone MM-70 or new Eastman MD315?

The Epi is very clean with ohsc. $600 obo. The Eastman $699 (seems to be the going rate on these). I'm entry level. Have a nice little old Vega A. Wouldn't mind picking up an entry level F. Played...
  20. Re: Bought the Vega. Thanks to all who walked me through. (pics)

Thanks folks. Did me that happy dance Mick. What strings do you use on your 210 Larry if I may ask?
  21. Bought the Vega. Thanks to all who walked me through. (pics)

Made the long drive to Salinas. Met the seller and made the purchase. The mandolin is in great shape considering it had been hanging on a wall for the last 25 years. Slight seam separation on the...

Re: Anyone care to comment on a Vega Mandolin?

Will do Mick. From the pic(s) it looks very similar to Larry's 20's 210. Down the coast tomorrow for a look see.

Re: Anyone care to comment on a Vega Mandolin?

Thanks Larry. Wow great info/link. I'm driving south this weekend to take a look at it in person. Seller has had it in the family for years but only on display. Believes it's from the 40's. Though it...
