Re: What is this amazing-looking instrument?

These always remind me of that horror scene at the zoo in the movie "Cat People". Never have been able to shake that image.
    Ugh.

    Re: Information please

Since we've sort of hi-jacked this thread, I might as well post a Luigi Dorigo example for posteriority.
This is a nice looking DeMegli-esque bowl, as Jim as noted...but with a Vinaccian / ur Vega...
  3. Re: Washburn (Regal) Model 2427 Two-Point Flatback

I owned one of these for awhile some time ago...Regal labeled.
Someone gave me beaucoup dinero for it likely because of a two-point fetish.
I'm pretty sure it was mahogany or maybe birch back....

Re: Should I buy a Charango?

Yes... to all your questions, David.

It looks like from your posse of instruments that you know what to consider. My only negative experience with charangos has been with cheaper models that...

    Re: Information please

I tried (in vain) to return to regularly writing in cursive a few years ago, just for the fun of it. It didn't go well.

I guess it's kind of like tremolo. Got to keep practicing it everyday or...

Nice looking case, Eug. What's it made out of? Hopefully, not what it looks like....

    Re: Information please

    Hi Victor...
Attached is a Luigi D label I have in my files. FWIW, I have a few examples from him all with the same style of label.

Re: Ciani mandolin really a Stradolin?

Nice work, Cary, thanks for sharing.

I added a brace in just about the same location on a KM11 after a catastrophic top collapse. Seemed like the only way to save it.
    It really tightened up the...

Re: Need Help Identifying Strange Mandolin

    Dan Fitzer?

Maybe his mother or his wife were Sicilian?

Fitzer would likely translate into Tessitore in Italian.

    But not in Catania.

Re: Puglisi Reale & Figli vs Luciano Grimaldi

You're not going to get any better advice than from David and Jim, but I'll throw my dos centavos in.

I agree with Jim... Puglisi made some of the best Catanese mandolins...but they vary broadly...

Re: CF Martin Mandolin Serial Number 2604

Agreed. I never thought Martin did bling very well. And glad they didn't try all that often.

I had a 000 bowl for awhile and thoroughly enjoyed it. One of the dumber sell-offs I've made.

Re: Need Help Identifying Strange Mandolin

Not much about this suggests Catanese or Sicilian build. The double dots are a red herring. Though Silvestri at least used them on this mandolin.

    Re: Bowlbacks of Note

Does it appear that they have two sets of tuners? (Red Arrows) One midway along the neck and then another further on up?

And frets in between? (Blue arrows)

  16. Re: Is playing TABS detrimental to really learning?

Each time one of these Tab vs Standard Notation debates come up I'm tempted to ask if there was anyone out there who learned to read dots and wished they hadn't...

    Mi sobrino, Pablo, on lute

Here's my nephew, Pablo, here in Austin performing a piece on the lute that was recorded for a seniors' center up Canada way.

  19. Re: Gibson opposes Collings' headstock trademark registration, ci

  20. Re: Gibson opposes Collings' headstock trademark registration, ci

Didn't this issue of headstock shape come up back in the "lawsuit guitar" era?

I don't have any more than a sketchioso understanding of all that, but iirc Gibson sued a few Japanese companies...

    Re: Goodwill Gibson A

I think the best advice is to never, ever bid on a mandolin or an accordion on Goodwill online.

Just don't do it. Spread the word.

  23. Re: 1963 Pasquale Pecoraro Roman Embergher-Style Bowlback Mandoli

That's what I appreciate about them, too, amigo.

Perhaps why I prefer the simpler models, without the Orson Welles WOTW headstock for instance. Or the clumsily drawn dragon or trompe l'oeil...
  24. Re: Please help! Newbie looking for bowlback to learn on!

This suggests to me that they knew there could be some distortion...
  25. Re: Please help! Newbie looking for bowlback to learn on!

This Washburn bowlback is currently in the classifieds.

Price looks reasonable. Seems worth requesting some further photos from the seller.
