    Re: V joint question

Larry, that's the reason to make a well fitting joint.
  2. Re: What if I removed the nitro finish from the sides of my mando

When I say a good plan I mean the simplest way to deal with it. If a lacquer re-fin was done I'd take it down to bare wood since there's something the original finish didn't adhere to. Are we sure...
  3. Re: What if I removed the nitro finish from the sides of my mando

Try a small section of Tru-oil. Sounds like a good plan to me. I would scuff it some so it had something to adhere to.
So the top and back are good?
  4. Re: Confused about a spirit varnish over a sunburst on first mand

I still have a jar of rottenstone I got from Vitali's in the early 70's. Ironically to do an oil re-fin on an old Gibson A.

    Re: V joint question

While I know your mind is made up I would just like to point out one more thing. If you were to do a straight dovetail like Lynn D. does instead of a tapered one you would have far more adjustability...

Adrian, same for early teens as for 20's you think?

    Re: V joint question

I can only say it's worth the time to learn to do a dovetail. If you can cut a V you can cut a dovetail.

    Check out this flame (NMC)

This is my old home made Strat from the early 90's. Love that flame...but it's made with basswood with a maple cap. Unfortunately it was just the sunrise coming through some wood slat blinds. Luckily...

Re: The virus, the economy, mandolins and you

Shout out to Andrew Mowry who took out time from building and with his family has been sewing some masks.
  11. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

    Oh, just one more thing....
I watched an interview with Sierra Hull talking about her instruments. Her mandolin is a 2009 Master Model made by Dave Harvey. Anyone who finds any fault with that...

    Re: Musician quotes

This is where my Jethro quote came from. Appears to have been sent to David G. many years ago.

Jethro Burns: How to select a mandolin
First, it should be cheap. How it looks isn't important. Nobody's going to see it but you. Tone isn't too important. Chances are no one's going to listen...
  15. Re: tinting white binding on a french polish instrument

I have used alcohol based dye right on the bare binding. It will cut into it just slightly leaving it tinted. Then finish over that.
  16. Re: Old photos - a hodgepodge of musicians - folkies +

I think Byron B. behind Vassar.

    Worth a few minutes.
  18. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

I tried to add a video of Dave Harvey speaking to some music store owners but ended up with a Thile video instead. Will try again.

    Re: Binding problem, any help?

My experience was the only thing that makes it look right is a perfect joint.
  20. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

At some point they made this Doyle Lawson model. I'd love to see them go back to that look.
  21. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

There are no rules as to what a scroll should look like. However most builders who are going for the F5 model like to get as close as possible to the early Gibsons. However when you ARE Gibson and...

1/2" at the crosspiece. That's from the rim to the bottom of the fingerboard.
