    Re: I can't stop...

No it is not wrong. The tailpiece should not be in contact with the top. A mandolin works like an archtop guitar not a flattop with it's glued down bridge.

    Re: Biehl Mandolin advise please

This is all really interesting. I live about an hour northwest of Davenport. There are a couple of cafe members who live in the Davenport area. The biggest musical claim to fame of that area is...

Re: Should I learn to make bridges while I'm at it?

Here are the net results of my bridge building exercise. It has been several weeks of part time work building jigs and templates and trying things. These pictures do not show several scrap bottoms...

Re: Ry Cooder on electric mando guitar

It was the first I heard of it also. Some people talk about it in the comments to the video. Apparently it is something Vox came up with in the 1960s though others have made them since

Re: Should I learn to make bridges while I'm at it?

One approach that might have a better return on both time and financial investment might be to make mockup bridge bottom blanks of maple scrap or something similar rather than ebony. They could be...

Ry Cooder on electric mando guitar

I stumbled on this old clip today of Ry Cooder playing electric mando guitar with David Lindley. Jesus on the Mainline

Re: Should I learn to make bridges while I'm at it?

I was considering saying something like what Adrian (HoGo) said but could not come up with a nice way to put it. Learn to hit the ball before swinging for the fences. I have been building some...

    Re: Suddenly feeling old

I don't know if Jimi ever played a mandolin. It would have been interesting. In Little Feat
Fred Tackett is quite a good mandolin player. He just didn't use it in the video. He plays everything...

    Suddenly feeling old

Some days you get slapped in the face with irrefutable evidence you are no longer part of the younger generation or at the forefront of cool or anything remotely like that. Tonight I was faced with...

Re: First attempt at heat bending: questions

That is a cool idea James.
I could not get away from scorching with a torch and had the fear of fire that has been mentioned. Last item I bent sides I clamped my copper pipe over an inexpensive hot...
  13. Re: Getting Small Chubby Hand/Wrist to Reach Around

The fingers should be more in line with the neck the way a violin player contacts the strings rather than straight down on the tips as a guitar player does. That helped me a lot. Actually you...

Re: Strings Catching on Higher Fret

It is possible there is a problem with the bridge adjusters. If there was not much thread on them or they were almost stripped out it might do this.

Re: Am I being to Critical on New Mandolin

I suspect that there are Lloyd Loar signed Gibsons selling for six figures with larger flaws, especially the wood grain irregularity. And there are definitely A style Gibsons from the teens and...

Re: Trouble hearing "in tune" unison strings

Tuning is never perfect. Even if your strings are brand new with no imperfections how hard you hit the string with the pick will change the frequency of the string. You can even see that with a...

That is too bad. I was just listening to a bunch of Louvin Brothers stuff tonight and was annoyed with myself because I could not recall his name. He was a fine, tasteful picker.

    Re: Major chord arpeggios

Sometimes you want to reduce your choices. All the notes in a G major scale do not necessarily work that well over a G major chord.

Also as you get into more complicated types of tunes with...

    Re: "Brain Flatulence" when playing

Supposedly Steve Kaufmann at one time had a sign in his teaching studio saying "I know you play it right at home" or some words to that effect.

As for myself I have considered asking a priest to...
  20. Re: A couple of position questions - trying to unlock the fretboa

There are really only four ffcp patterns. There is kind of a cool symmetry and flow to them once you figure them out. As Bill said the natural minor and other modes only require a shift in the...
  21. Re: A couple of position questions - trying to unlock the fretboa

There are only four patterns. That does not seem like a dizzying array of choices.

Seriously once you see how they connect and cycle through over the fretboard there is a certain symmetry and...

No this is not a truss rod issue. You should loosen the strings if you have not already done so and get thee to a luthier. As the previous poster suggested, if you are the original owner it may be...
